Original announcement:
In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit Godzilla.

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

So we can take it this series of spin offs are called anthology.

I'm hoping it means the other spin off is another back story film instead of a separate character film like predicted early on.

I would like a Solo/Chewy film but I would rather it happened after episode IX

The cast has officially been announced along with our first glimpse of a few of them in character...

Brian Muir is one of the most respected sculptors and artists in the film industry. He has been working in film for over 46 years and has 39 movie credits. He has been working on Alien, Willow, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, Harry Potter, Guardians of the Galaxy and many many more. Today Muir shared on Facebook the project he is currently working on …

Back in July 2014, the man who originally sculpted Darth Vader’s helmet had officially announced on Facebook that he started working on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now in similar fashion Muir announced his involvement with Rogue One.

One of Muir’s most memorable work was the sculpting of the Darth Vader helmet and armor using Ralph McQuarrie’s design in 1976 for Star Wars: A New Hope. He also sculpted the Storm Trooper armor, Death Star Droid, CZ 3 and finishing work on C3PO.
So... the rumors for Vader appearing in Rogue still continues...

All pretty decent choices IMO. I'm just hoping they go for the better actor rather than the better look-alike. Who are you hoping they go for mate?

I'm not really a fan of any of them apart from miles teller but he shouldn't be Han Solo and especially not Dave Franco.
Personally I think the actors they are going to choose from are too young. Tough one this with a Han

Young Han = young actor. Plus, if they stick to their plan of making a Star Wars film every year, then they'll want to go as young as possible just in case they feel like continuing Han's story.

I'd love it! Especially if Hayden were back in the suit doing his saber thing. Still hoping that rumor is true also.
It would be pretty cool to see him return, but only if he had some acting lessons lol. Although, to be fair... he was young and Lucas has never been known for giving good direction to actors, so with the right direction I think he could give us a far better performance than he did in the prequels.

I think he acts just fine. The problem is more "SW fans" than anything. Still, if he wears the suit, there probably wouldn't be any lines anyway.

.

Yeah I get that but all the actors look like little kids. Just can't see Han in any of them.
I've got nothing against Dave Franco but he is the worst choice for it
