Vizio Pops 65-inch 3D LCD TV

December 16, 2010 | by Grant Clauser
Following up on its announcement last month of three 3D TVs, Vizio is coming out with yet another, and it’s a big one. The 65-inch XVT3D650SV is an edge-lit LED LCD TV with 32 zones of local dimming in a system the company calls Razor.

The most striking feature of this model is what the company calls Theater 3D, which is basically a platform supporting passive, rather than active 3D viewing glasses. Most current 3D TVs (including others from Vizio) use glasses with built-in LCD shutters that must be powered by a battery. Users of active shutter glasses sometimes complain about the size and cost. Vizio’s Theater 3D glasses will be more like the passive polarized glasses used in movie theaters. According to a release, Theater 3D glasses allow the picture to be up to 50 percent brighter. Vizio also notes that its glasses will be compatible with most commercial 3D theaters, so instead of taking the freebies, you can bring your own—the TV ships with four sets of glasses.

“Our Theater 3D technology is a significant step forward in bringing a high-quality, immersive experience home to consumers,” stated Matthew McRae, VIZIO CTO. “The bright and flicker-free images, extremely low crosstalk, and comfortable glasses allow extended viewing of content without the side-effects associated with the first generation of 3D technology. This is increasingly important as more content is released and 3D gaming goes mainstream.”

The XVT3D650SV supports a wide selection of 3D formats including SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D, a visually lossless 3D format that enables 3D content to be delivered over 2D infrastructure as well as RealD’s patented side-by-side format.

Aside from the 3D features, the new model supports Vizio’s Via internet app platform that includes content from Amazon Video On Demand, Facebook, Flickr, Netflix, Rhapsody, Pandora, Twitter, VUDU and Yahoo! TV Widgets. Additional Apps recently released include Fandango, Yahoo Fantasy Football, NBA Game Time, Wiki TV, My-Cast, MediaBox, TuneIn Radio, Web Videos and iMemories.

The XVT3D650SV is available this month for $3,499.99.
