Hey Ninjas!

We're keeping it simple again this year by putting up one thread for the nominations.

It's been a challenging year for all of us, thankfully there were some great releases that kept us asking for more.

It's time to share your favorites, in our 10th Annual SteelBook of the Year for 2020.

After the nomination period ends around mid January 2020, the voting polls will be opened, and you will be able to vote until end of January, 2021. The winners will be announced afterwards.

Any Steelbooks that were completely released, shipped and in the hands of customers by December 31, 2020 are eligible.

Please nominate your favorite picks in your reply to this thread. @Wreck will go through them and pick who will make it to the voting polls.

Feel free to use pictures, to share with fellow Ninjas why you've made that choice.

Have fun everyone & thanks for being part of the hidefninja.com community!

Stay safe. #WearAMask

Dunkirk Manta and OUATIH Manta are both beautiful steelbooks. Especially the latter.
Haven't bought any other new releases so I don't know about the others, but Akira Kimchi and Birds Of Pray manta looked great too.

So many releases this year, but so little that stands out to me as being great. As usual, I haven't bought most of the things that will probably end up on the final list, but here are a few things I have that I liked:
  • Filmarena Jaws (steelbook is bad, but the rest of this edition is complete classic)
  • HDZeta Inception (steelbook is so-so, but the lenticular is good, and the holofoil/embossing on the back cover is nicely done, even though I usually dislike holofoil)
  • Birnenblatt Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (the art wasn't to everyone's liking, but I find it to be a very classy, elegant edition)
  • Best Buy It's a Wonderful Life (simple, respectful design; good use of a vintage poster)
Razzie nominee:
  • Best Buy USA Chernobyl (honestly: "An HBO A 5-Part Miniseries"??)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this poll is for just the steelbooks itself, and not the rest of the packages (slips for example)? That would disqualify both FAC's you mentioned.

Is it? I was just about to nominate GITS FAC, purely for the amazing package (steel is very meh). I'll keep quiet until it's clarified if that's the case :pompus:

If we're judging this on the steelbooks themselves, I'd say my joint favourites of the year would be;

Captain Marvel WeET (single lenti)
Frozen 2 Fanatics (single lenti)

If we're looking at the package as a whole, GITS FAC sits head and shoulders above every other release in my opinion. Purely down to the package though, the old WWA steel is a bit meh.

Overall package, GITS FAC, country mile. Runners up, Jaws FAC, OUATIH Fanatics, Cinemuseum's Casino and A24 non steelbook pacakge, the big yellow book, original.

Steel, I liked OUATIH Manta Steel for the design, debossing and finish. Struggling to think of any other great steels...I'll have a think. Dunkirk Manta looks really nice but skipped it.

In previous years, there were lots of different votes for different aspects of releases. Sorry if things have changed and I didn't know.

Oh yeah no problem, was just pointing it out. Great picks in terms of overall packages though! Only one I disagree with is Inception, I prefer the FAC, even if it has worse lentis I just don't like the completely holofoiled back on the Hdzeta slip.

They're both cool releases. I think HDz's lenti is a little clearer, and I feel like FAC's choices of images are a bit samey, so the HDz back cover was nice for variety.

I agree with your choices of Dunkirk and Akira, which both look excellent, but I don't own either one, so I'm just going by photos here. Kind of kicking myself for Akira—I vastly underestimated how popular it would be and how quickly it would sell out! :)

I always forget what came out this year but looking at my order history I'm seeing just 4 orders with Manta (Joker, OUATIH, BOP & Dunkirk) 3 WEA Blufans (Frozen 2, Deadpool 2 & Spiderman Homecoming), I can't remember anything really from HDZ and it's normally quiet for me with the likes of Weet, FAC, Kimchi and Nova

Im gonna put it out there though I've loved getting the Zavvi Star Wars releases, they've more than made up for any perceived lack of premium releases, the likes of Studio Canals Fifth Element and Total Recall have also been great releases.

I think Avengers Endgame Zavvi was very well received and although there are much more appealing steelbooks with nicer finishes I think this should be nominated purely because it's a Zavvi release!

Same thing with Akira. That lenti is beautiful but it's impossible to find for a decent price.
