Plot: Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.

A very fun AND consistently funny movie, better than most comedies, with real, true portrayal of ethnic Armenians and Russians, speaking the way they would in real life, with sympathetic characters (except for the 'spoiled brat' young guy), and more cursing than I ever heard, in all three languages - enjoyed it throughout making it one of this year's best films! Reminded me of my teenage years a bit, and also of a great Wayne Wang movie Center of the World, even though second half here and some roles are different and basically reversed.
Mikey Madison is excellent in the main role, only seen her play psychotic killers before.
Highly recommended, especially if you found this director's previous films a bit bland.

Saw this tonight. Really, really enjoyed it. Far funnier than I expected (and I had actually read a couple of days ago that it was funny), Mikey Madison is superb but so many other really good performances too. Was a bit disappointed in the soundtrack as I had seen a lot complimenting it (and the head of the cinema gave a brief intro into this as it was a preview and mentioned it too) but one song in particular was used very well. There was one section that I thought dragged on far too long and killed the excellent pacing a bit, but I still really liked it and will definitely pick it up when it comes out (although not a chance I'll be watching this with the missus with the amount of nudity in it).

I feel sad for Demi Moore missing out on Best Actress but Madison absolutely deserved it as well.
Sean Baker is the first person to win four Oscars in one night.
Not bad indeed.

Ironic that she was up for The Substance and they gave it to the young actress. Not seen Anora yet so can't comment whether it was worthy. However I find it hard to believe it's a better film than the Brutalist in all those categories but apparently so. Guess i better get to watching it!

I've not got round to watching The Brutalist yet, it's finding the spare time for it. I'm curious for sure to see how it stands up.
Anora hasn't actually been my favourite of the "top" films of last year. I was pleasantly surprised to see it had kind of swept a lot of the Oscars it was nominated for.
Yep, that could be seen as a bit of a snub to Demi Moore given she's more or less won every other award for The Substance. I suppose the optics don't look great given the The Substance's general theme of ageism, but then Hollywood is more often then not pretty dumb. The Oscars is all about lobbying bullsh*t anyway

Delighted for Baker and Madison, it's a great piece of work and it's wonderful to see an indie movie and someone like Baker that tells these types of stories get recognition. I was surprised to see the movie do so well too but I'm glad it's for people like them.
