As a guy that has actually in the past worked within an industry that deals with product licensing I think you are wrong sir. Yes the studio has a say but I honestly don't think they care much about the finish given to a product. Who does? The licensee that knows they can make X more amount of $$$ by cutting costs and corners.

I worked as a buyer for major retailers for 10 years selling films and music I was involved in arranging exclusive deals with studios
I specialised in Films Video/Dvd and Film music

Most times they came to us with deals and a few time I went with them to get a deal for a exclusive and then later other shops were offered the deals after we had them first and sometimes was a one off deal with limited exclusive releases not to be given to others
Not every exclusive deal you go with as a few factors come into it the amount of stock you have to agree to can be to high or the price not attractive enough to be worth it as I have refused some deals with major artists due to the demands for a exclusive as if price is to high you can risk been left with lot of stock and end up selling at a loss and if you keep having this you risk your business been stable

I have arranged price deals for special sales backed up with TV and print media adds
Important factor with these deals I used to arrange to have sale on return or sale on exchange deal included if possible to avoid been stuck with stock

With Limited Exclusive releases you wont get sale on return or sale on exchange most of the time and if you did would be very rare
If you go with expensive production costs you risk loosing money if they don't sell as the retail price will be high and you risk not selling if the price is to much for average customer
The average profit margin is 30% its not a lot really if you understand how this business works

Recent Deals for 1000 or 2000 limited they should have them glossy and top quality as you have less risk not selling

I would tell them what the customer wants but they still have the say what's on offer to you
I have asked for deals before and got a yes and sometimes got a no to a deal as its the studio or record label who decide

Disney would have approached Zavvi are you interested in exclusive and others and Zavvi got the deal because they agreed on a price and amount of stock to be taken that was to Disney liking
I'm sure they approached Amazon and others but Zavvi won the deal or simply the others rejected a exclusive as it was not a money maker for them

Zavvi can request its made cheaper yes but its still Disney who decide if that happens
The Artwork Disney have final say and yes they would listen to changes but its not zavvi who make the final decision

Its a pity I don't work in the business now as with steelbooks I would have had lot of fun getting deals and I would have let them know what you guys want and don't want

Back to the Bambi steelbook its looks good to me and its a 100% purchase for me as I want this pure and simple

Disney are a very large company compared to zavvi and ofcourse there are exceptions but my teaching tells me that with most products retailers get the largest profit

That's not how it works
Retailers don't make big profits the supplier does

Example
Cost Price £8.19 the price shop pays the supplier Warner
Retail Shop usually has a set price structure based on cost price charged
£8.19 + mark up = £10.83+ Vat 20%
£12.99 price in shop to customer
£12.99 is the Retail Price
Warner gets £8.19
Retail Shop makes only £2.64 profit
Government Vat gets £2.166

£12.99 the customer pays to the shop
Warner makes £8.19
Retail Shop only makes £2.64 on the sale as a profit

Most people don't know a retail shop has to sell lot of units to make a decent profit
If it reduces the price to sell off in most cases its makes a loss usually you would never sell it below cost price

I will be getting this
Bambi is one of my all time favourite Disney Film and getting this as a steelbook makes it a pleasure for me

You are exactly right Paul...that is not how retailers make the big profits....they do it by cutting corners on things like more expensive finishes thus lowering their overhead cost on the products.

Not really.

I'm a veteran of retail sales, and depending what sector you are in there are different ways of making a profit.

Bulk buying/selling, luxury goods sales (always massive profits) or, in the jewellery trade, just sell anything - most watches generally make around 70% whilst silver and gold usually have a 100 to 200% mark up.

In the case of HMV and others of their ilk, it's usually done on bulk for most items.
Course, in the good old days when they were simply one of the retail arms of a giant corporation that produced and manufactured as well - Thorn-EMI, ( and HMV also made things themselves - TVs, Hi-Fi, radios etc, then profits came easily for them.

Like the artwork. Not super exiting, but the character drawings are better than on some of the other steels. Think I'm going to pick this one up.

Answer is Disney
All steelbooks
It's the studios who decide the artwork and type of finish
Matte or gloss or spot gloss

Suggestions are looked at and company's like Zavvi can ask for
artwork change and type of finish and it's Disney who made the decision and not Zavvi or amazon etc

Remember Zavvi Amazon Hmv etc are only sellers
They don't own the rights to a film
It's the studio as in Disney who decide what been released
All they do is approach Zavvi are you interested in a
This title
Sometimes a retail like hmv amazon etc will approach a studio looking for a exclusive on a title
But it's usually the studio who do the approaching

Who are Disney anyway? I'm sure if the decision was up to the artists who made the films, there's wouldn't be a lot of Disney steelbooks floating around. Back in the day, many of the filmmakers were involved in everything from storyboarding to merchandising, and it really shows. Today it's more up to marketing. It's not so much about creating a piece of artwork that sells the movie as it is about telling people what they want to hear. "It's for kids".

The artwork on this is very nice, especially the front. I like this better than Roger Rabbit or any of the other 2013 steel of the year candidates. I'll double-dip. It's worthy.

But anyone who owns the Viva knows that the variety used in the finish, the colors, the art front and back, embossing, gold borders, inside art, disc art, etc. are what make what I believe to be the nicest collectible ever. All hail the Bambi VMB!! #1 all-time. You have to hold in in your hands, unwrapped, to appreciate its perfection.
