Blu-ray will be dead by 2012. Here's why...

I agree, Ultra HD might be the final physical format but i cant see it being as big as blu ray. It took years for even that format to take off

Cloud storage is the future

Only us collectors will continue to invest in the next generation on physical format

I don't buy into the whole buying digitally thing yet. It just seems like such a waste to me, when almost always for the same price, you can own a physical copy. If the digital versions were like half price, i may start buying into it. Pretty much all that i buy digitally are some Playstation Network games, which aren't available digitally.

I still buy cd's as well. What happens if your computer crashes, or iTunes is hacked or something? Plus with a physical copy, it's kinda like how others view paintings and such. The whole package and holding it in your hands is the complete work, to me. I guess i'm just old school.

I say dvd will be dead by 2015.

I can't see that happening, while us collectors mostly just buy Blu-ray there is still a huge market for DVD. A quick look at Amazons top sellers show the majority of top sellers are DVDs. A lot of people haven't upgraded to HD yet or simply don't care about High Definition. For a lot of people DVD is still good enough and they don't want to fork out more money on a new TV. I can see both DVD and Blu-ray running side by side for a long while yet, I still buy DVDs myself when I have too! Some movies aren't available on Blu-yet and some of them may never make it.

I do think Ultra HD is going to be a hard sell, people aren't even convinced about HD, let alone ultra HD. I can see that being for a niche market only. It's just not practical for everyone to get a 65" TV.

I would agree, I think people will turn digital. A lot of people don't care about having something physical in their hands. I'm sure us collectors will continue to create a market for physical media.

I totally agree. It's a sarcastic reply to the ridiculous article, that blu-ray will be dead by 2012. There's nothing more special than to touch and feel a physical thing. I think that's being human. Digital is handy (no pun intended) which humans really like.

I thought you were being sarcastic but wasn't sure!:hilarious: I totally agree with you!

I couldn't be bothered reading the article, but I agree 100% with the majority here... Blu-ray will be around for a good while yet. As Sigill said... even DVD still shows signs of being really popular. Hell, look at vinyl... that's been around for decades and yet there's also still a lot of people out there who buy/collect them (including myself). If demand/sales are there, then it'll last as long as it needs to. :D

I looked at 'thenumbers.com'. They estimate sales, and for the week of June 2nd only...

DVD unit sales of Dark Skies (no.1 on the chart) 136,117, $2,036,310
Blu ray unit sales of Dark Skies (no.2) 58,501, $1,167,683

DVD sales of the Parker (no.3) 124,275, $2,480,529
Blu ray unit sales of Parker (no.3) 46,637, $1,164,064

I'm not surprised DVD is still dominant.

The Blu-Ray format died the same way people were thinking about home computers of the future in the 50's/60's:

I wish I could buy more things digitally - then I'd have more room for my steels!

But seriously, Ultra HD 65" is only useful to people with a home theatre room who haven't heard of projectors.

And digital media won't become truly mainstream until most devices can connect to the Cloud.

I don't see physical formats dying soon, I mean just look at vinyl records.

I do however think that the more we go towards cloud services we will see more limited releases specifically tailored for collectors.

The question is however is all movie releases will have physical formats, maybe they will just choose the more popular ones.

Zavvi have already started this. Release every movie in a Steelbook and discontinue amarays :hilarious:

I totally agree that Blu-ray might be the last format because of the digital era, it might be just me but I prefer to have a solid copy than a digital one 100% of the times.

Do digital downloads/streaming come in 1080p 24fps? Do they come with DTS HD Master Audio? Do they come with all the special features you get on the physical disc? As far as I'm aware they don't. But if they ever did, I'd still want the physical item.
