just a warning for those who haven't seen this film think before you watch it because after viewing this film it will change you. It made me sick even watching this film no other movie has ever bothered me as much. Its so realistic its scary, the animal violence in the film is real and this movie has been banned in multiple countries. I watched it out of curiosity thinking it can't be that bad its only a movie. From a art stand point I don't get the appeal behind it, great film making it so realistic. This movie is about shock value and it delivers.

It's not about shock value at all when it was trying to be "realistic". Especially if you're referring to the animals. There's nothing really shocking about animals being killed and eaten by a tribe in a jungle. I mean, we do it here, and in worse ways...

I know what your saying but I was talking more about the turtle scene and animal torture. Even when tribes kill animals its not in cruel ways they want to kill and eat them as fast as possible, normally you would kill first before ripping its shell apart. The fact that they did all this with real living animals for a B horror film that doesen't add to the film in my opinion one way or another except for the fact of saying OH **** they are slaughtering real living animals in this movie and the human deaths are so convincing the Director was questioned by the authorities over it, says something about the film. Its almost like your watching a snuff film or something, call it artistic film making all you want, or a cinematic genious for his cinematography tricks but to me anyone who thinks up a movie and the way the scenes played out in this movie has something wrong with them mentally. Normal minds don't think like this and thats why its so difficult for most to stomach. my .02 cents

It is a singularly unpleasant film and while I like to think I can stomach any film thrown at me, this one does go beyond the pale. Not a film you'd want to visit again.
Any "entertainment' value it has is totally lost on me and to be honest this is one film if it never saw the light of day again I wouldn't shed a tear.

yes, i also found some scenes to be cruel and over the top for entertainment purpose... but i always saw it as intentional, for me the film is about the cruelty of mankind, which is the same from people from the so-called civilized world.
i've seen enough videos showing how meat gets produced these days, that's mass slaughter and real everyday animal cruelty. i wonder how people get so offended by the turtle scene over 30 years after it happened, then go out and eat a beef steak the next minute without thinking twice. :p

This is listed as the "original directors cut", does this mean the uncut version, or the cut version, or the new edit on the UK disc?
:dunno:

Thanks! ;)

EDIT: Nevermind, this is the same version as the previous Grindhouse DVD! :scat:

Do you any proof backing up how turtles are killed and eaten by amazonian tribes? Because for one thing, most people don't kill an animal and then immediately eat it, so the "as fast as possible thing" simply isn't correct. Chances are they would have killed it and then brought it back with them.

Also the fact is the crew DID consult with a tribe. The monkey scene? They weren't going to do that, whatever the tribe they were working with suggested it because monkey brain is a delicacy or whatever for them. I doubt the director said "alright guys, go find a turtle and then do something to it".

But, again, do you know how OUR "civilized meat" is made? Vastly more cruel than chopping up a turtle, but I don't see people getting upset about people eating hamburgers in movies. It's the classic "lets show sad looking kids crying to sarah mclachlan music" for donations tactic, people don't actually care about something and only pretend they do when they actually see it.

Spare me on the whole our meat is from industrialized cruelty story I've heard it one too many times. If I remember correctly it wasn't the tribe that killed the turtle, native Americans and other groups of human beings such as jungle people all live off nature and respect it, they even fear it everything they do has been passed down for generations and they have found optimal ways to do things to survive. Killing a animal is not killing to them. They kill the animals as fast as possible so they can eat faster. So I'm not buying the turtle scene is just what the tribes do. And my point wasn't so much of what tribes do it's the point that the movie wasn't a documentary it's entertainment not for educational demonstration.

Animal torture scenes aside, this films fairly tame compared to some of the modern underground horror films.

Is this a new transfer? Or just another re-release in new packaging?

It's just the rawness and realism of it, masterpiece In that sense but sickening to watch, I can watch the most gory bloody heads flying film and it don't bother me something about this movie that messes with your emotions, it's all the torture and **** combined or something. Eli Roth might try and recapture this grittiness but it's not the same.

i think what pyschoscot was talking about are modern underground horror flicks like "august underground", "murder set pieces", "snuff 102" or asian CATIII movies like the "guinea pig" series...
eli roth is very mainstream and a "softie" compared to that.
some of the mentioned flicks go way too far even for my own taste.

with "cannibal holocaust", i felt very shaken too after watching it, but i was prepared for that, it's intended by the director, and sometimes it's exactly what i want from a film.

I was shaken and sickened after watching August Underground and thought it was a found-footage masterpiece. Although I wouldn't call Eli Roth a softie, if early reviews of The Green Inferno are accurate.

Got the complete August trilogy on 2 disc snuff editions signed by the cast :D what can I say, I'm a sick puppy! Mordum the 2nd one makes Cannibal Holocaust look like a Disney cartoon!

Eli isn't a softie but he does want his films in cinemas and that means compromises, that the likes of Fred Vogel aren't willing to make. :)
