Classic movie label the Criterion Collection is to launch on Blu-ray in the U.K. on April 18 following a multi-year home entertainment distribution pact with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Until now Criterion has only been available in the U.S. and Canada.

SPHE will bring selected titles from Criterion’s extensive catalog and future new release slate to the U.K. for the first time. The first wave of films, featuring all the supplements from the U.S. editions along with their exclusive artwork and packaging, are “Grey Gardens,” “It Happened One Night,” Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth,” “Only Angels Have Wings,” “Speedy” and “Tootsie.”

Criterion Collection chief executive officer Jonathan Turell said: “We are excited to launch the Criterion Collection in the U.K. Starting with these six great titles, we are happy to be able to bring selections from Criterion to our very devoted audience in the U.K. We are thrilled to build upon our strong relationship with Sony and look forward to expanding the Criterion audience.”

“Criterion represents the very best of classic and contemporary filmmaking and we are delighted to bring this prestigious collection to the U.K. for the first time,” added Aodan Coburn, executive VP, international, SPHE. “This partnership demonstrates SPHE’s continued commitment to growing our distribution business.”

Great hanks for the update

Ordered both.
Not sure about sex lies as was looking at hmvs version so will compare both and get one.

Matter of life death is a must
Same here... I've been meaning to pick up HMV's Premium Collection edition for a while, but I may go with Criterion's now instead.

I've never seen A Matter of Life and Death, but I've heard great things, so will definitely be picking it up!

Def recommend life or death.

As for lies and videotape Will probably go for the criterion as it will have all the extras and be restored but and I know this sounds daft I like the hmv cover art better. The criterion one is just a tv screen screen shot

  • Thanks

Apparently a rights issue specific to the uk so you either buy the current French pressing or buy the region a only Criterion when it comes out Unlikely to be resolved

What is going on with them?

What will be there July releases? Any ideas?

It doesn’t look good there advertising these and then cancelling them
God knows mate... it's a bit worrying though. Rumour is it's probably all down to a rights issue with both titles, but you would've thought they'd 100% secured the rights before announcing them.

I know !,,
What are they going to do now as both July titles are cancelled etc. Not release anything in July. May have to get the region 1 which is what I planned for Bull Durham but they are around 30 instead of the 18 for the uk version

This sucks

It does happen At the last minute theOrwell estate blocked the bbc release of 1984 10 years ago and it’s been in limbo ever since nothing anyone can do about it

You would have thought criterion would not announce the release until they got the rights sorted i even ordered both of these off amazon
Looks like no releases in july

Doesn’t mater how well you do your groundwork something can surface at the last minute That’s why vanity labels like Criterion and Arrow try to announce their titles as late into the day as they can
