Classic movie label the Criterion Collection is to launch on Blu-ray in the U.K. on April 18 following a multi-year home entertainment distribution pact with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Until now Criterion has only been available in the U.S. and Canada.

SPHE will bring selected titles from Criterion’s extensive catalog and future new release slate to the U.K. for the first time. The first wave of films, featuring all the supplements from the U.S. editions along with their exclusive artwork and packaging, are “Grey Gardens,” “It Happened One Night,” Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth,” “Only Angels Have Wings,” “Speedy” and “Tootsie.”

Criterion Collection chief executive officer Jonathan Turell said: “We are excited to launch the Criterion Collection in the U.K. Starting with these six great titles, we are happy to be able to bring selections from Criterion to our very devoted audience in the U.K. We are thrilled to build upon our strong relationship with Sony and look forward to expanding the Criterion audience.”

“Criterion represents the very best of classic and contemporary filmmaking and we are delighted to bring this prestigious collection to the U.K. for the first time,” added Aodan Coburn, executive VP, international, SPHE. “This partnership demonstrates SPHE’s continued commitment to growing our distribution business.”

Amazing month! Would be in for all three if I hadn't already imported their blu-ray release of Godzilla last year... don't quite love it it enough to spend the money upgrading to 4K.

I'm not as up to date on Criterion schedules as I should be, how long does it normally take for new releases from NA take to come over here (of the ones that do come over that is)? Mulling over the potential need for asking the other half to import No Country For Old Men as she says I'm impossible to buy for normally. No chance I'm not getting it but if it's likely to come over relatively soon after the NA release (mid December) then I'll wait.

Hard to say, as there's never really any rhyme nor reason to their release schedule in the UK. Sometimes they can be released alongside the US releases, other times they can take months, and more often than not they don't release them over here at all! Obviously UK and US right holders can differ though, which will understandably make things very difficult for them. Personally I don't have much hope that No Country will appear over here, but who knows?! Stranger things have happened with Criterion UK.

Cheers for the info, if you haven't much hope for it coming this side of the pond then I'll probably just import then. Thanks!

Tbf it probably won't cost you that much more (may even be cheaper) if you import anyway, because UK prices are ridiculous!

A 40% off sale is supposed to be happening throughout November to celebrate Criterion's 40th anniversary
That would excellent, there's about three or four UHD ones I'd like to pick up. I bet it's not a 4k sale though, you watch. Not that I can afford anything in the next three months with all the pre orders. Lol.

The official press release stated 4K, and the sale has apparently already started rolling out in certain HMV stores. No confirmation on the full list of titles yet though... wouldn't be surprised if it's just a very limited few. I'm yet to pick up any of their 4K releases because they're just too damn expensive, so here's hoping some of the titles I actually want are included.

People have been fast off the mark with this sale! Quite a few at HMV look to be sold out already, (though if it runs all of November, surely must be re-stocked), and lots of Zavvi prices are higher to start with so 40% off is not that great. Rarewaves are running a 10% off site wide at the moment and added to the 40% off Criterions, there are some superb deals to be had from them. This is easily the best Criterion sale we've had for many years!

Amazon clearly didn't get the memo and are only offering 20% off too. I went with Rarewaves due to the extra 10%... my first time ordering from them, so hopefully all goes well!

I've been using rarewaves for a couple years now and for the most part I think they're really good. Shipping can take a while, sometimes up to 2 weeks to arrive, but every order over £10 is free to ship, so can't complain too much. The only thing I would caution on is if you are buying larger boxsets or more fragile items like steelbooks. Rarewaves mostly just use jiffy bags, (though sporadically seem to use boxes or other thinner cardboard), so for anything in regular cases like Critierons, I've never had any problems, but I've had a few dings and bumps on a couple larger boxsets. (Also they still do 'points', so every now and then you can get a nice £5 or £10 off something.)

Good to know, thanks! Thankfully I only ordered amarays, so fingers crossed they should arrive ok. Don't mind the long wait either, since the prices (and free delivery) more than make up for it :D

I grabbed Risky Business , Okja , Lone star, The sword of doom & Solaris! you?
Nice choices! Most in the sale I already have, so settled for After Hours, Risky Business, Smooth Talk, Take out, and Dogfight. Kinda wishing I'd added Lone Star now as well tbh.
