Den of Geek, the leading destination for genre entertainment fans, is thrilled to announce its return to the iconic SXSW Film and TV Festival in 2025, complete with the latest SPECIAL EDITION issue of Den of Geek Magazine!
In our exclusive cover story, we poke around DEATH OF A UNICORN with JENNA ORTEGA, PAUL RUDD, and director ALEX SCHARFMAN. Discover the reasons Ortega finds unicorn blood “harder getting off,” how these creatures are Old Testament terrifying, why a “pure-hearted maiden in 2025… [would be] an idealist empath who’s on a college campus somewhere protesting,” and much more!
In addition to unicorn magic, Den of Geek also gets an exclusive first-look at HAPPY FACE, Paramount+’s unnerving new twist on the serial killer and true crime genre from the point-of-view of a killer’s daughter. We speak with ANNALEIGH ASHFORD, who plays MELISSA G. MOORE, the daughter of real-life serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, aka the “Happy Face Killer,” as well as the REAL MOORE about the TV series and a lifetime cast in a monster’s shadow.
“[Happy Face] shows what it’s like to have these letters still coming into my mailbox, him watching my Instagram, strangers reaching out to me, just the emotions of what that’s like, and the emotions of what my children go through, having a grandfather who’s a serial killer,” Moore tells us.
The issue also features our exclusive catch-up with director GAVIN O’CONNOR ahead of the SXSW premiere of his long-awaited THE ACCOUNTANT 2. It’s a film O’Connor and star BEN AFFLECK have been planning for nearly nine years, and one which the helmer says “was a rollercoaster trying to get it made.” Still, here is with part-two in a planned trilogy and the realization that “we were hammers on a nail, refusing to give up.”
All of that, plus previews for the SXSW narrative film, documentary, television, and music line-ups can be found in the new issue of DEN OF GEEK MAGAZINE, which will be distributed on the ground and for free in Austin, and which is available to view online here!

Equally as compelling as our beautiful digital cover is the story that goes along with it. Go behind the scenes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with us as we speak to showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers along with cast members Anson Mount, Carol Kane, Ethan Peck, Babs Olusanmokun, and Celia Rose Gooding about the season ahead.

Learn how Peck continues to grapple with fully inhabiting the role of Spock, why Mount sees Captain Pike as his most personally resonant role, and how season 3 begins to explore more playful dimensions of characters previously shaped by trauma. You’ll discover how the showrunners plan to evolve each season (up to its fifth and final run) with fresh character challenges, leading to a prequel that transitions into a version of The Original Series.

Elle Fanning and the Predator Take Up the HUNT on 10th Anniversary Cover of Den of Geek Magazine
Oct. 9, 2025 - New York, New York - Den of Geek, the premier destination for fandom and pop culture enthusiasts, is thrilled to announce its return to New York Comic Con in 2025, complete with the 10th anniversary issue of Den of Geek magazine.
A decade after debuting as an NYCC special edition, the magazine is back in its hometown with the latest issue. In an exclusive PREDATOR: BADLANDS cover story, director DAN TRACHTENBERG and stars ELLE FANNING and DIMITRIUS SCHUSTER-KOLOAMATANGI invite fans into the homeworld of the Yautja aliens and beyond, teasing a radical departure for the popular franchise where the Predator has now become prey. It has also become one-half of a two-hander between Schuster-Koloamatangi’s heroic hunter and Elle Fanning’s new riff on the Weyland-Yutani synth robot line from ALIEN

“I just loved the silhouette of it,” Trachtenberg says of the core dynamic on the cover. “That’s something I’m drawn to. It’s a really great, dynamic silhouette. I love the silhouette of Mad Max and his dog in Road Warrior, which is why Naru had a dog in Prey. I love the iconography of that. I love Monster Squad; the silhouette of the kids with Frankenstein in the sunset. What is the iconography of the movie? Everything starts with that.”
Still, don’t expect you know where either of these characters are going. While Fanning’s synthetic Thia might be badly damaged—to the point where the silhouette of her over a Predator’s shoulder earned the film the working title of BACKPACK—the Emmy-nominated star teases, “These synths are highly, highly developed. Much more than we’ve seen before.”
In addition to the cover story, the issue ushers in a new era of Stephen King dystopia with EDGAR WRIGHT and GLEN POWELL ahead of next month’s THE RUNNING MAN. Adapting a King novel originally set in 2025, there is an eerie irony to this more faithful version of the story reaching the screen now. Although for Powell, an actor who’s yearned to work with Wright since moving to Los Angeles in 2008, it’s been nothing but a dream.
“I got down to the wire and sent him a really nice text just telling him why, if he hired me, there’d be no other actor that would ever work as hard and put his body on the line more than I would,” Powell says. “I meant it. So he took a shot on me and hired me for this movie.”
The issue also includes more Stephen King via an extensive preview of IT: WELCOME TO DERRY where we speak with ANDY and BARBARA MUSCHIETTI and the cast and crew of the new series, as well as how it in some ways returns to more sinister horrors of the novel’s original 1950s setting. Says Andy, “Among all the complexities of social and political stuff in the ‘50s, it was a simpler life… for some people. But it’s not toned down. It’s actually more gruesome than any of the movies.”
The issue also includes interviews with SCOTT DERRICKSON for BLACK PHONE 2, TONY HALE, and our on-the-ground visit to the headquarters of the company which brought the Dire Wolf back earlier this year and is aiming to do the same for the woolly mammoth by 2028.
Beyond the magazine, Den of Geek will be on the ground and all over NYCC for a full-court press, which includes our annual studio interview space, as well as surprises and events like our live charity auction benefiting BINC.
So keep an eye out for our team, magazine, and events on the ground, and on our website for coverage, including from the new issue!
