Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

Still not a big loss...
But I guess it depends on your point of view. And let's face it you do look at it in a negative way in this thread.
And please don't ask me if you're not allowed. Of course you are. I don't have anything against you personally. I would have made the same post if anyone else had posted those links.

With the exception of Watchmen (which has a re-release) all the steelbook's you posted links to were release fairly recently. As I think you know it takes time for most releases to rise in value.

But listen, I've stopped collecting steelbook's a long time ago so in a way I agree with you but for the most part you link to newly released, opened, damaged or steelbook's that has been re-released without ever mentioning it.
It makes you come across as a bit of a car salesman to me. Or a journalist.

In closing I'd like to say that I think the heyday of steelbook's in terms of value on the second-hand market is long gone and I don't see it coming back. If you collect with the purpose of making a buck then I think you're gonna have a hard time.

Thanks for your advice. It is not a big loss but still a loss.

As someone who owns about 700+ Steelbooks, I have a reasonable knowledge of the market.

As you are out of the game, I think you should be doing something else instead of making assumptions (car salesman, journalist).

Just because I no longer collect I can't have a reasonable knowledge? Does this apply to say football as well? Should retired players shy away from commenting?
That doesn't really make sense to me.

And I wasn't assuming anything. I said that to me personally you came across as a car salesman or journalist not that you are one which would be an assumption.
You're the one that assumes because I no longer collect I don't have any knowledge on the subject.

Odd...

My sincere advice is to put me on your IGNORE list. I only post links. How people interpret that is not my problem.

If you don't like how they interpret you it becomes a problem for you.
And sincerly I enjoy your posts not only in this thread but on this forum in general but that doesn't mean I agree with everything. Or anything for that matter.
I personally find your voice to be different than most on here and you many times point out negative things. And even if I don't agree with your opinion I really respect your voice as a contrast to all the 'omg! next grail!' comments that many have.

But I will say that you almost never seem to respond to any of the criticm anyone has against you or your views and that's pretty odd to me. That particular aspect of you I don't respect much.
I'd rather that you stood up for your comments in stead of just saying 'how people interpret that is not my problem'. It's your right to do so but it's not something I find appealing.

I sincerly hope my criticism doesn't put me on your ignore list but if you do decide to do so I respect that.

I post links to low valued auctions. Don't deny that. At the same time, I don't post links to high valued auctions as there is already a thread for that.

I am merely posting links. None of my comments (if any) are directed at any member. If they interpret the link in a different way then I need not be answerable to them. What I am trying to convey is sometimes it is worth to try your luck and playing the waiting game instead of jumping the gun early and moaning about paying a high price, as the Steelbook market is now overcrowded with supply outstripping demand except for a handful of titles.

I don't have anything against you but I would like to stress that there are some affluent folks with an "I know everything attitude" who derail the thread. I hope you don't side with them for the wrong reasons. :)

I look at most announcements and just think to myself that ain't worth my time. I will not even give them a second look regardless of pricing. I get excited for new releases and very few catalogue releases. I guess I'm picking my way through the minefield in a way. I was critical of the amount of releases coming out of the UK and still am so much so that I avoid almost all of the releases. I like Taiwan the best. Very well spaced out releases. Not quantity, but quality
