It's 2026 and we're meant to believe that instead of immediately uploading the most sensational discovery in living memory to social media thereby exposing it to the whole world, the characters instead decide to reveal it through a local news station for no other reason than it allows all of the other events of the film to happen. Colin Firth's character spends the whole film trying to stop this from happening, but in the end just gives up and watches it happen. At the start of the film the male protagonist has a magical alien wand which terrifies the bad guys and allows him to rescue his girlfriend, but at the motel he gives it to his girlfriend for safekeeping who escapes while allowing himself to be captured. Why didn't he just do what he did at the start of the film? The girlfriend also attempts to kill him at one point, but instead of cutting her loose he decides to keep her around which leads the goons directly to them. Colman Domingo's character has a whole ass living alien which he could reveal at the start of the film, but then it would only be 5 minutes long. Also if the aliens are all powerful they could've just revealed themselves at any time. And then there's the alien language weather report which quite honestly is laugh out loud bad, as are the scenes where the male protagonist is "hiding" in plain sight between a flimsy wooden fence before stealing a car, and with his girlfriend behind a tiny rock with the bad guys just yards away. Stevie Wonder could've spotted them.
Spoilers aside, nothing is really explained in the film, things just happen. Apparently it was meant to make people question their faith, but the only religious character in the film is called up and admits she kinda always knew it and doesn't care. Aside from the terrible script the casting is also awful. Josh O'Connor looked like he couldn't be bothered and doesn't command the scenes he's in at all, and Colin Firth makes for a really poor villain. We just get a bunch of weird close ups of him gurning. The CGI is also incredibly poor.
It's a terrible film from start to finish. I haven't been to the cinema for about 10 years, but I was excited enough for this movie I decided to go and see it and it was a total pile of ****. I'll go a step further and say it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
His 'taste' just aligns with mine 95% of the time, but I'll watch Disclosure Day myself anyway.
For example, he trashed the Alien Earth series, but I happened to like it!
I've never been a Spielberg fan though, I think he's just a capable director in the sense of managing a production like managing a successful toy store or something, but not an artist.
As I said in the films thread in the movie section they had the makings of a decent film and there were some brilliant performances in the film but it was let down but some stupid elements...
The whole mind control stick
The awful CGI (how is it CGI 20 years ago looks better than what we get now)
Bringing out the Alien at the end
To name but a few

CGI looks worse now because it's being pumped out 24/7 for everything, which would be fine but there's only so many people available and only so much time. Something has to give.
