do you buy steelbooks for the movie? or for the steelbook?

I was wondering why you guys collect steelbooks and limited editions.
Is it more in relation to the awesome packaging, or because you really like the movie?

With prices of some steelbooks reaching over a €100,00 and also the many steelbook releases lately I am often wondering why I still collect them, because they are very expansive in comparison to a normal amaray version of the movie. Don't get me wrong here I love collecting steelbooks and lenticular slipcovers, but some prices are so high that I really am wondering why I should pay so much for it while I can get it three times as cheap in a normal amaray case. If it is really about the movie why spend extra money on a steelbook?

A good example is the Thor Kimchidvd lenticular edition. I love the look of that steelbook, but if you want to buy it right now you need to pay around €120,00 to €190,00, you know how many normal versions of the movie I can buy for that?!

So lets do it like this:

Where would you stand with collecting? 1 is only for the movie, 10 is only for the steelbook.

I would probably place myself around 6-7, because I love steelbooks, but also I love movies. I would not easily pay more than €15,00 for a steelbook UNLESS I really love the art or the movie, or it is a movie of Tim Burton.

5 for me. Both take a factor. My favourite movie is Moon but am I hell going near that awful German steel. Fantastic Four is a lovely steel but I doubt I'll ever watch that movie again lol
 
I think I am 4. I buy blu rays for what I really want to watch again in good quality. After I choose movies for buying, I start to find steelbook for that movie, because I love that movie and steelbook case makes me owning REAL BLU RAY. but if I can't find steelbook or it has too much premium(like kimchidvd's frozen lenticular). I give up. Yes. kimchidvd's lenticular case is really awesome. I really wanna have that one, too. but ordinary steelbook for frozen is $40. It means if I buy lenticular in ebay, I am paying $150 for lenticular case! It's ridiculous.

1, I definitely buy steelbooks only for the movies I love and I know I'm going to watch many times. I will only buy a steelbook of a movie that I haven't seen if it has a nice design and if it's at a bargain.
 
1. It's always been about the movie for me. However there have been one or two situations where i went full on 10 and bought blindly.:hilarious:
 
5-6 for me. The most important for me is the film, but if you can buy your favorite movie in a beautiful and original steelbook, then I choose the steelbook, but only for a reasonable price. Sometimes finding a rare and expensive steelbook, we forget about the main thing about the film.
 
1-2 but there is the occasional 10 from time to time... but if a movie total sucks ass I wont buy it no matter how good the steel maybe ;)
 
A 3 for me. If I love a film, no brainier, I will buy. If it's an average film, but an excellent design, I will buy. If it's a rubbish movie, but say it is as sequel, or finishes off a set I already have, only then do I buy in that scenario :thumbs:
 
1 I have to want the movie, a steelbook (pre-order) may make me buy it on day one instead of waiting for the price to drop.
 
I no longer collect steelbook. Only buy 5 a year at the most. I'm a 3 now. By that I mean that I have to really like or believe that I'll end up really liking it but it also has to have a really nice design and hopefully a slipcover which the last 4 steelbooks I've bought have had. If it's a mvie I absolutely love but the artwork isn't a 10 and there's no slipcover then I'll just get another edition of that movie.
But I used to be a 8 back when I collected steelbooks. I still had to like the film but the fact that it came in a steelbook was the main thing that made me buy it. And I just got tired of doing that without getting a good feeling when looking at my collection so I stopped collecting.
 
10 :D (or at least I used to be)

I bought steelbooks solely for the collectability of the steelbook. If I wanted to watch the movie I would either rent it or buy it cheap in amaray.

Releases like the Virgin Exclusive Terminator Salvation are perfect examples of my collecting habits. Wrapped up and sealed it is rare, unwrapped it becomes exactly the same as every other release of that steelbook.

2, always for the film except where there is a very good deal on a steel that has had decent reviews and sounds like it could be interesting (e.g. bought 'Collateral' for just over £5-not a bad film). Would never venture into the super hero steel market for example as I have no interest in those films.
 
1. I will never pay more than the original price for a steelbook. I don't have that many as a result, but I only have them for movies I love. I can't understand a lot of collectors and the crap movies they buy just because of the packaging...
 
I buy art dependent. The steelbook must have good art and finish otherwise I buy the amaray version. I also only buy movies I want to watch and own :)

So I guess around a 4 to 5 for me.

Probably around a 5.

Sometimes I'll have to have a steelbook simply because I love the artwork, even if I know it to be a bad film or have never watched it so can't say for sure if I'll like it.

A lot of my steelbook purchases are simply because I liked the film.

Having said all that, I've sometimes passed on some SB's even for films I liked simply because they had terrible artwork.
