The artwork is custom made by Heidl for a vinyl soundtrack so this is where the artwork came from but he used a different font for the title which, in all honesty, looks much better.

Was just thinking which artwork they could've used and this one came to mind:

One of my favourite films from my childhood, but I think Zavvi should've stuck with the standard poster artwork Does anybody know if the picture has been cleaned up ? The PQ on the original blu-ray release is a joke.

Thanks for sharing! Never even knew there was a vinyl for this... I agree the font looks better on there, although I do also like the font used on the steelbook as it has a very retro/80s feel to it IMO.

After a closer examination, this is probably a custom CD cover. I automatically wrote vinyl because I was browsing for some old records on the web. My bad :)

Yes, unfortunately by the time this came out in 1986, LPs had all but disappeared and CDs were the big thing with covers like these below.
As we all know LPs have since made something of a come-back but as I'm not in the market anymore I don't know how widespread they are . . . and I do remember being upset at the time when I could no longer buy my music on LP as all the shelves were being cleared to made way for these pretty jewel cases with their miraculous shiny silver discs inside going by the name of CDs and my days of browsing the acres of LPs in those cathedrals of home entertainment, those massive partly subterranean London record stores such as HMV, Virgin Megastore and Tower Records on the corner of Regent's Street and Piccadilly back in the day, were swiftly coming to an end :(

Unsurprisingly the cute kid of the mid 1980's ain't so cute anymore:-

Tower Records still had lot of Vinyl in the years between 1986 to 1991 it was only from 1993/94 that it went mostly CD
I used to purchase lot of Vinyl Sountracks from them in 1989-1993
I started working for Tower Records in 1993
I was the soundtracks buyer for Tower Records in London Piccadilly Store 1993-1995 and Later in Dublin Store in 1995-2000
Tower Records Ireland (2 Stores) are still in operation and have good selection of Vinyl

Soundtracks are still a good seller on CD and Vinyl

I wish I had your optimism. If zavvi started to sell more steelbooks with gloss finish then I really would tip my hat to them for trying to improve their quality, but I'd have to see it to believe it.
Again, Zavvi has no say on what the finish is on steelbooks. They sell them, they don't make them.
Second Sight or Disney would be the ones who make the call.
And good thing they got Randal Kleiser to do a commentary track before he went to jail.

According to Wikipedia he was arrested in connection to a bank robbery this year. Yikes.

Again, Zavvi aren't some mute automaton that receives a bunch of steelbooks with zero input on their own exclusives that they're forced to sell . Anyway, let's not get onto that age old argument and just enjoy the fact that they're releasing some steelbooks with decent art for once \o/.

Best Buy and Walmart also get exclusives. They also have zero input. Exclusivity has to do with contracts about distribution within regions. Again, it is like saying your local movie theater should make better movies.
They are just retailers.
And, you may remember, Zavvi was the exclusive retailer for the Ex Machina steelbook before everybody else was allowed to have it. So they have had quite a few exclusives that were fantastic steelbooks.
