I thought if the value was under £135 it wouldn't get slapped with a charge these days as you're supposed to have paid VAT already on anything under?

VAT charged if value over £39, customs duty charged if over £135, hence I was charged vat due to the incorrect marked value of 100AUD instead of 70AUD...

Apparently, according to a staff member at Royal Mail, customs are automatically applying customs charges regardless of whether tax is paid at the point of purchase. They then state (from personal experience) that it is the responsibility of the buyer to claim back the vat from the seller.
Basically, customs are taking the p#ss...
