Steelbook & Collecting FAQ's:

Q: Where can I find a list of Steelbooks released?

A: blu-raysteelbooks.com

Q: Can I play movies contained inside Steelbooks on my Blu-Ray Player?

A: It depends-Blu-Rays are coded with Region A, B or C. Most Blu-Rays are "unlocked", regardless of what region they are, but it's always a good idea to check this forum or web resources before buying, as some are "locked".

Q: What are the differences between Steelbooks™, Iron Packs™, Metal Paks™, Viva Metal Boxes, Tins, etc?

A: Check out pics and discussion in our forum here

Q: What does "G1" and "G2" mean when discussing Steelbooks?

A: "G1" (1st Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a DVD-sized case. And "G2" (2nd Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a Blu-Ray-sized case.

Q: How to fix a loose disc on a steelbook you want to keep factory sealed that came with a floater?

A: Fixing a loose disc

Q: How do I navigate international shopping sites?

A: You can download a free 'add on' for most browsers called 'Google Translate'. Once you have it installed, the pages will translate automatically.

Q: I have many more questions-is there a general list of links to help me learn about Steelbooks, protecting them, etc?

A: Yes, here

thank you, i will visit usps then.

Officially, they will tell you that the customs number CANNOT be used as a tracking number. But I have found SOMETIMES, you can use that number to see it's progress until it leaves the United States. No guarantee, but it's better than paying $24+ to ship regular USPS Priority Mail International with tracking.

The customs number trick does not seem to work as well with the 1st Class International option, in case someone offers that to you.

The customs number, once scanned, will print on the receipt that the USPS employee gives you.
It should look something like LCxxxxxUS

Make sure you use this box when you go - don't pay more than you have to send it back.

Hope this is the right thread. I received a dented steelie from amazon.de. Do I just follow the instructions for a replacement in 'my account' or should I email them first?

I've always just went ahead with the return process and asked for a replacement within that and its worked out OK.

So I decided to take a look at my recent order history with Amazon.ca. Over the last six months I've ordered 18 steelBooks from them. Fifteen of them arived mint and three were damaged. All three of the damaged SteelBooks were replaced for free.

So, by my count that's one out of six SteelBooks from AZ CA arrive damaged. But then, I'm int he US so the shipping is much shorter of a distance than for some of you, which is probably why so many more of my SB's from AZ Germany arive damaged.

Also got a lot to do with the quality of the cardboard they send them in. Find it ironic that Axel has used, imo, the best combination for single steels of a fairly thick cardboard inner which locks together, packed in a jiffy bag (not the thin bubble type either). Never had problems with those at all. I do know that they take a lot of flak especially with their "minor dents" clause which is poor. Amazon starting to use formers but have to be packed right to start, not their strongest suit. CS on the other hand is very good, as I have found out they try almost TOO hard to be good.

Hi Dazza, I moved your thread here. Sorry to hear about your trouble, but that sounds like a typical response. Most amazon retailers will reimburse your shipping cost in some fashion when received, but you have to pay for it up front - I'm unsure if amazon.ca will in this case. Sometimes they also will offer a percentage off or even just send you a replacement.

They are usually very helpful, so I hope it all becomes clearer when you speak with them.

Can I suggest that you insist each is sent in a cardboard former. It seems that most Amazons have started to do this as a form of strengthening/direct protection for SB's. Only downside is that is not a complete sleeve so there is one open side and with an od number of Seels one could lose out.
They are having a bit of a torrid time at Amazon.ca: I had a go at them myself beginning of the week but replacement arrived yesterday (2 days from reporting it to new disc on desk, Canada to UK, not too shabby).
Keep at them firm but fair remind them that you are loyal customer, blah blah - but yeah they will refund you shipping but you will have to get tracking at that sort of value.
Finally press really hard for ex-gratia payment or voucher to cover out of pocket expenses, they'll probably give it you. Happy hunting.

That's strange. Anytime I've ordered steelbooks from amazon.ca, I've got them in lots of 6-10, and they put air filled bubbles in the box, to cushion the steels. Some still arrived damaged, but amazon.ca has always been good in replacing the damaged items. If they ask you to send them back, just write them a friendly email that it's cost prohibitive for you to send them back, especially when they didn't package your box properly.

They usually respond to your return request within 24 hours, so wait until then to see what they will do. Maybe send them links to photos of your damaged SteelBooks in the return request as well? Best of luck!

Thanks for the links Trevor, but IMO, these really don't need their own thread and the General Retailer thread works nicely as a place for discussion about amazon's packaging (in General), so I've moved your post here.

This week I had Monsters arrive mint from Amazon.de and a replacement for Inglorious Basterds arrive mint from Amazon.ca (the original arrived scuffed as part of a larger oder). The replacement IB from Amazon was shipped via DHL Express and took only two days to get to Canada to the US, while Monsters was shipped via Deutsche Mail and took over two weeks to go from Germany to Los Angeles.

The ship time was different, the shipping methods were different, but both arrived mint and had one commonality between them. Both SteelBooks were shipped individually.

As such, the SteelBooks were tightly wrapped inside their envelopes and had no other Steels to rattle around with in transit. Becasue the envelopes were tight, I think they formed a more rigid structure around the SteelBooks than would be with a lrger oder whos packaging often is loose, limp, and sometimes not even fully sealed.

And it could be possible that because the packages were small and lightweight that they were sitting with other lightweight mail items like letters, magazines, etc. rather than boxes that would be bigger and heavier and could potentially damage the Steels in transit.

So, my new theory is that ordering SteelBooks one at a time gives you the best chance for them to arrive mint. The downside, of course, is that shipping is much more expensive this way, although my Monsters was part of an order with Tron and they shipped seperately due to their different release dates.

Speaking of Tron, that is on the way from Amazon.de by itself. If it arrives in mint condition then I think there might be something to this theory as that would be three out of three for individually shipped SteelBooks for me.

That's funny. Any time I get singles from amazon, they end up looking like someone played frisbee with them on the shipping doc.

That's been my luck with them so far too. Two out of three (individual) shipments have arrived dented, dinged, and/or scratched/chipped. Due to the really tight packaging, I assume this happens in the warehouse sometime before being packed for shipping.

At least their customer service is top notch to help deal with the problem. :)

As I've said before I generally don't have packing issues with any of the Amazons if they pack in even numbers. Put an odd one in and it will create havoc, but CA is second to none imo.

What's everyone's experience like ordering from amazon.de, when the package doesn't arrive? I ordered Monsters x2, Skyline, and 3:10 to Yuma. The package was supposed to arrive on 06/10.

I contacted amazon on 06/11. Well, Skyline and Monsters are both OOS now :( I wish they sent me replacements when I contacted them on 06/12. They told me to wait to 06/18. Tracking still shows it's in Germany.

Looks like I'm probably not going to get the package :(
Anyone else get steelies from them after the expected delivery time frame and when the tracking never updates?

Maybe it's held up at U.S Customs. I know here in Canada every other order from them usualy arrives after the expected delivery date becuase our customs take their sweet a$$ time releasing parcels
