How do you afford your hobby/habit?

Just curious to see what the general makeup of steelbook enthusiasts do in their spare time to afford collecting these little pieces of metal.

When I started collecting, I had just finished school and was still working at a local arts and crafts store making shite hourly money. When all those cheap WB steels were rereleased earlier this summer I was excited.

In the past few months I was able to land as job as an IT guy, with salary! Now my problem isn't having enough money to buy the steels, it's having more money and remembering to pay the bills instead of getting all the Blufans and Kimchi releases.

So how do you guys afford your hobby/habit?

^ its about being able pick them.

That Too bad for you because Zavvi's Disney collection is unreal! I ended up buying 20 Disney (Disney/Pixar) Steelbooks from Zavvi, all different titles. They are very nice. All opened mint

Zavvi does some really nice releases, for example: There Will be Blood.

ON TOPIC: I work, pretty much everyday. That's why I give retailers hell when they sell me damaged steel.

Have you not collected the US / Canadian Disney and Pixar steelbooks, iron packs and viva's? They are even more amazing IMO. The Kimchi / Korea lineup is quite spectacular as well. Off course I have Aladdin ( the best of the Zavvi lineup ), Jungle Book and Lady and the Tramp ( by default :hilarious:)

I'm an IT guy too so when something takes my fancy I just chip away at my salary a little ;) next month I'm likely to buy a couple of fairly expensive ones - normally I just buy stuff in the £20-40 region that I like.

Frank,

Unfortunatly, I haven't had the pleasure to obtain the US/CA Disney/Pixar Steels, Irons, and Vivas. They were released before my time (as a collector). I really want Beauty & The Beast and Lion King in my collection, but I was hoping Zavvi would release it in their line up. I will have to get one.

I've been turned on to Korean steels as of late. I'm really into kimchi exclusives at the moment. I have Leon full slip, Thor 2 Lenti, The pianist. I have one Blufans and one PA: UP 3d Lenti & the wrestler 1/4 & full.

The Korean steels are by far the most expensive, but they are best quality and packaging.

I work all day. I work hard. I work 6 or 7 days a week. I don't always get a day off. I spend too much on Steelbooks, sure, but at least I have some to show for it. Collecting Steelbooks brings me pleasure :naughty: I'm a movie super freak. Film fanatic. I was an avid Hunter/Collector of VHS tapes before I got out of style. The were going Out of Style, but to me they were going Into style. I could buy the titles I WANT, 30 titles plus at a time. Good will is a gold mine for VHS. Ive got around 1000. I used to average 3 movies a day, depending on length.

Anyway, Im done collecting VHS like I used to. Ill pick one up if its a super rare / old movie that I want to see, but other than that Im done. I'm spoiled on Blu rays! I have about 200+ steels in my one year collecting them EEK! That's about 16 steels a month. "Holy dog ****" (R. Lee Ermey voice). I'm in the process of turning all my faves over to steel. It costs lots of dough. But I'm learning how to do this the most cost effective way. Get on release, not on ebay/amazon.

i work 7 days a week for myself with no boss taking a cut (im my own boss )and im single with no kids , and im not much of a drinker maybe once a month so my vices are the steelbooks , that will prob stop when im married with kids :(

Part time job at a cinema is all i have but i'm hoping the mentality i have now will carry over when i have a full time job. Kimchi (1/2) & Plain Archive (1/2) new releases and maybe two/three zavvi's depending. August may be the only month i break this, but that's what the budget can afford so that's what i get.

LOL! Just kidding... :p I have my Regular daytime job (Monday-Friday) working in the Maintenance Dept. at a Community College. Currently I'm looking for a 2nd Job! This DAMN habit/hobby is getting expensive! But I don't want to quit it! :ohno:

Great thread! I've just discovered it, but with the money that seems to be sloshing around on this forum, it's a question I've asked myself many a time! I have a modest collection of about 50 steels, and about 60/70 amarays. I've built it up relatively slowly, and always within my budget, which is made up of a decent but not great paying full time job in logistics. I really need to start thinking about saving more for a deposit on a house though, and maybe curbing my enthusiasm for the shiny blu stuff. I've always gone for quality over quantity, I'd never buy a film I had no interest in. But I may have to become even more selective in the near future...:ohno:...bloody societal pressure and responsibilities ehy? Who needs 'em?

Yeah. The only Zavvi one I've actually missed out on was Aladdin, and I acquired that in a trade. But I'm beginning to think that's not the worst idea either, very few things on Zavvi have actually sold out.

Exactly mate, as I don't collect Disney's though I didn't have that problem. Always get what I have my eye on at Zavvi for at least 25% off RRP, and that's just being patient. Only exception was There Will Be Blood, but about a month later I picked up a copy for cost price on ebay so jobs a good'un.

Only really relevant to the Korean stuff and the odd other special edition, am I right? I've saved hundreds of pounds with what I consider to be my own, most cost effective way...playin' the ole' waiting game...:movie:
