Just curious to see what the general makeup of steelbook enthusiasts do in their spare time to afford collecting these little pieces of metal.

When I started collecting, I had just finished school and was still working at a local arts and crafts store making shite hourly money. When all those cheap WB steels were rereleased earlier this summer I was excited.

In the past few months I was able to land as job as an IT guy, with salary! Now my problem isn't having enough money to buy the steels, it's having more money and remembering to pay the bills instead of getting all the Blufans and Kimchi releases.

So how do you guys afford your hobby/habit?

Interesting thread. I figured I'm too young for this hobby, I started too soon. I'm 23, I study Computer Science and have a half-time job as a IT supporter. I don't get much but I could live with it if I could stop buying Blu-rays and steelbooks. Thankfully I had saved up a bit and have started collecting last summer spending that money. It's a strange hobby it makes me feel good and bad at the same time. :)

I dont have some high powered executive job, or run a global business, I just have a regular average wage job, but I suppose its what I dont spend my money on rather than what I do that allows me to fund my hobby. I dont drink, I dont smoke, I dont gamble...Id much rather have something to show for my money so I like to buy collectables and movies.

I dont have a huge collection compared to a lot of folks, but compared to my friends and workmates its huge. A lot of them dont understand why I spend so much on Blurays and collectables etc but I dont understand why they would spend hundreds of pounds a month on Beer, cigarettes, horse racing and lottery tickets. They spend WAY more on that kind of stuff than I do on Blurays etc and at the end of the month, I have a nice collection, and they have a cough, a hangover and a pocket of losing lotto tickets...I know which I prefer!

When I started collection I had a bit of money saved up that I spent over about a year and now I'm just very picky about what I get.
Have almost completely stopped buying steelbooks with the exception of 3 out of the 4 Kimchi releases and one here and there.

I just have a regular job but the overtime I earned the last couple of years coincided with my blossoming interest in Steelbooks.

Now there is no more overtime but I figure if I change my strategy when it comes to purchasing Zavvi Steelbooks I could save a lot, i.e. stop pre-ordering and wait for the fire sale 2 months after release.

Yeah. The only Zavvi one I've actually missed out on was Aladdin, and I acquired that in a trade. But I'm beginning to think that's not the worst idea either, very few things on Zavvi have actually sold out.

Avoid buyer's remorse

I went back to school for an advanced degree, and now I work for myself, so I can afford these little beauties (also much happier work-wise).

Now that you have some cash and you are more into the hobby, you may start to feel differently about those cheap WB steels.

Anticipating the next wave of WB steels is not what keeps me going in this hobby. I've bought pretty much what I want that's not a grail (I can't justify those asking prices, and neither can many others, which is why they rarely sell).

Don't spend more than you can afford. Don't buy titles that won't improve your collection. Don't buy for trades--use that money on your precious wants.

Quit my job, run out of crack to sell, sold 1 kidney and now I'm a male prostitute.
