How Limited is Limited?

New to this Steelbook collecting addiction and started my collection with a very snazzy copy of World War Z (UK) Blu-ray 3D Steelbook.

The cover proudly announces that it is limited to 5,000 copies and I was wondering just how limited other "limited Edition" steelbooks are.

When they claim to be limited edition is there a figure that is published to say how many copies are printed? Is there a list somewhere on the internet that confirms how many copies of a steel book are printed? I notice some retailers occasionally mention numbers but I was hoping for a more definitive guide.

Any info much appreciated.

Next purchase Captain Phillips (UK) I suspect…

limited could be 50/100 print run or 30000 print run

Limited is nothing more than a marketing buzzword. It means there is a finite amount of copies available, which in practice makes every product ever made 'limited'. As METAL MAGPIE says, in terms of steelbooks this can mean a print run of anywhere between say 100 up to the tens of thousands. I'm sorry I can't give you the definitive guide you're looking for, because there isn't one. The only solid thing I can tell you is that the designation of limited will tell you more about the manufacturer's intended desirability of a product than its production run.

The minimum print run is usually 4k. However, there are exceptions to this rule, with some of the recent Zavvi releases numbering 2k. Some retailers mention the numbers as it's one of the selling points for some collectors.

As a rule, the print run is usually way larger for new releases (films) going trade wide (ie not restricted to any one retailer). I seem to recall numbers like 30k or even more, can't really remember offhand. Retailer exclusives have a higher chance of being limited in number.

Hi sggclark sometimes as well members here sometimes customize thire own editions.

Making them TRULY unique and nothing short of WORKS OF ART.

500 to 10,000 print run vs 9 BILLION humans on the planet okay not all of them are going to want to own the steelbook of whatever media.

Limited as Softwing quite rightly said is a marketing word to make something desirable yes it works , only IF enough people want what is being offered as limited.

I guess they can use the word limited because most of the time, there is one batch of Steelbooks produced whereas I imagine with amarays they are simply produced as and when they are required.

Limited Edition purely means there is a finite number produced, of which no definition exists in law as to what constitutes an acceptable amount defined as being finite. It's all relative to demand.

In theory, you could dispute that supply outstrips reasonable demand in regards to certain products, but in regards to a £15 blu ray, what loss will you be disputing? If it was a fine work of art, that was priced in accordance with its rarity, then a dispute would be worthwhile.

The word limited is applied to many products purely as a marketing tool. Limited edition shower gel, or toothpaste being two such examples. What the challenge is for many, is to choose a Steelbook whereby demand outstrips supply, causing its exclusivity to push up its price. Bad Grandpa, a 1k release, appears to be an example of the opposite.

I notice that the WWZ copy I have is numbered 3399 (of how many I don't know?)

Are may steel books actually numbered?

5000 world wide on WWZ Entertainment Store U.K The first one with lazer etching.

Not that meny are numbered on the acctual steelbook to to my knowledge. Others members may be able to advise more . I just buy IF I like them not that botherd about collections or exclusivity.

I am very new to this forum and have been wondering what the general consideration is for numbering steelbooks like WWZ. Obviously this would only be relevant for limited releases but I am all for it as it adds to the exclusivity . This is only my opinion but it would be interested to know what everyone else thinks?
