Hi Karl, I used to do triathlons in my 'youth' but nothing that hardcore!

I rode a stage of the Tour de France (not in the race itself!) In the French Alps last year and would echo Wreck's suggestion and stay well hydrated - I got mild heat exhaustion when I rode and I felt like I didn't stop drinking all day! I find it hard to eat while exercising, but you really have to keep refueling to get through.

Anyway, all the best for the big day - I've got my first cycling criterium race on Saturday -nowhere near the challenge you're undertaking, but daunting nevertheless! :)

Not sure about the amazing bit, but thanks anyway!

I tried all the drinks, gels, etc, but get cramps if I take too many - like I said not a big fan of eating on the bike, but was surprised how good a baguette or two went down at the top of the climbs!

I think its easier to take on food on the bike as you're not pounding your body against the ground all the time - liquids are probably best on the run.

The other obvious thing to say is to try things in training and warm up events and don't do anything new on the day.

I wish you good luck with this karl! You have my total respect for doing an iron man! I participated in an Iron Man with some friends before and we shared the events. I did the marathon and my two friends had to do the cycling and swimming. An marathon is hard but it doesn´t even come close to what you are planing. I have the greatest respect for everyone who is able to do the whole thing!
Since you are asking for tips. I saw many guys that had support people that gave them something to drink and to eat so be sure to have some one at the track that can help you. I would give you the advice to do the eating while cycling and only to drink something while running. From my own experience with running i think it´s best to have eaten something at least 1 to 1,5 hours before stating the marathon or you could get a stomache pain. The body will run down the blood support for the inner organs under high strain to give a better support to the muscles. That´s why the stomache doesn´t work properly for some people while running and it can start to hurt. You still have some time till your event so perhaps you try how your body reacts when you are training next time. It´s better to see how it works for you in the training than at the actual competition.
Once again good luck and my honest respect!
