'Der Weisse Hai' has been the title of the film in Germany for decades, so I am not surprised that's how they are marketing it. Personally, I will probably stick with the UK ed for this one,though...

Well, if the German title also said JAWS, no-one here would know what this was about. So Universal Pictures Germany decided to find a title that could fit the movie - we, the Germans, got used to it and that's ok.

But...there are film titles which have eventually been changed for a DVD or BD release like NIGHTHAWKS (i.e. in German: NACHTFALKEN) or TOTAL RECALL (i.e. in German: DIE TOTALE ERINNERUNG - as used for the cinema promotion in 1990).

I wonder if perhaps the literal translation of the English word, 'jaws', would not have the same connotation when strictly translated to German? Maybe they would think of dentistry or food or something. I don't know. I do know literal translations often times don't work, though.

Too bad, though, since I like Amazon.de a lot now since they changed their packing methods from awful to awesome.
