Plot: Barents Sea, August 12th, 2000. During a Russian naval exercise, and after suffering a serious accident, the K-141 Kursk submarine sinks with 118 crew members on board. While the few sailors who are still alive barely manage to survive, their families push for accurate information and a British officer struggles to obtain from the Russian government a permit to attempt a rescue before it is late. But general incompetence are against all their efforts.

I remember personally this accident. It was horrible. And how it was ...

afterwards revealed how horrible deaths the crew faced.

I have a vague recollection of this... I was far too young to fully understand everything that happened, but I remember it being on the news.

Wasn't it meant to be the Titanic of submarines (as in, "unsinkable") or something?

If I remember rightly the Russians asked for the British help as they were the only ones that had the specialist skills needed to rescue the russians. No idea if the Russians have invested in those special deep water subs since for rescue.....

Russians did not ask. British offered and Russians said no.

I think that's one of the reasons you're seeing a more aggressive Russia today because they didn't like being perceived as being weak and Putin in particular always regretted any weakness that Russia has shown since the fall of the old Soviet Union. One of the rare times Putin was not able to pass the buck..... The guy does not like being humiliated period.

It's Putin.

And IMO they've never liked to show weakness. Even in Gorbatšov era. Yes, Putin is a dictator.

I'd say Putin is more a bully than a dictator. All the old problems that existed with the old Soviet Union are still there. He's never addressed any of them and sooner rather than later the Russian people are going to wise up to him. He's trying to build an empire the way you built up a a pyramid of playing cards. Sooner or later it'll collapse. Yes I know it's Putin, it wouldn't let me change it. I tried 3 edits and it wouldn't do it......

To whom he's bully ? USA ? His own people ?

I don't think any country would welcome an adversary's help on a Naval accident. Subs tend to have secret tech that they would never want their adversaries to know about, under any circumstances.
Hmm yeah, kinda makes you wonder if they only offered help as a chance to get their hands on such info.

...plus Russians were too proud. Accident was bad enough, and not able to handle it by themselves even worse.
