I'm surprised that they have taken something that is already on the front of the SteelBook, and used it as the back artwork, like they did with Dumbo. I will give it a miss as I am concentrating on completing my Pixar collection of SteelBooks and Vivas.

Lady & The Tramp will sell out very quickly I expect. I wish that they would put in a little more thought before picking the artwork though.

It's kind of entertaining watching grown adults make such a fuss over a Disney movie, especially when its target audience (children) could care less what these look like :D

As for the back... I find noisier backs only work well (most of the time, anyway) when it's a horizontal image from back to front (like Blufans' Oz for example). Otherwise, to an extent, no matter what you put back there seems out of place and/or redundant (like slamming two random movie posters together), just my OCD opinion.

Well, that's really how Disney market their films nowadays. I don't know about Lady and the Tramp, but the early Disney films like Snow White was not primarily aimed at kids (though they made sure they was 'family friendly'). Tom & Jerry wasn't made for kids either originally. Ironically, people seemed to have more respect for animation back in the early days. I guess that's why I'm being such a crybaby about those recycled DVD covers.

yeh its a complete lack of imagination. the front and back sides of a stellbook case are like two canvasses. both providing endless artistic opportunities. all disney have done is plonk bog standard amaray art on the front, then duplicate an element on the front onto the back. that is a missed opportunity to create something new, unique, special.

i guess because they are disney releases, they didnt want to take any chances of upsetting people with 'out there' artwork. but what we end up with is art that is 'safe' and as a result comes off lazy and uninspired.

See now I have to speak out against this type of thinking that I see all too often within the steelbook community. Personally, I care not if this artwork has been used before. As soon as I look at that cover, I see the movie playing. It captures Lady and the Tramp perfectly. The colors are fantastic. If "already available" artwork is the best, then I say... use it. I wish they did the same with Pan's Labyrinth. I really like the image on the cover of Pan's, but I believe it should be on the back, with the popularly used artwork on the front.

The only thing I wish Zavvi would consider doing differently is stop with this nonsense of plucking pieces of the front cover and centering it onto an otherwise blank back cover. THAT is uninspired, boring, and lazy. oh, and lame.

But... overall... this artwork is a win.

Exactly. Sometimes art is overused because it's awesome. The main image on the front of this is iconic, if they had used anything else it would have been a complete fail. I agree with you about Pan's Labyrinth too.

i think people have double standards then, as usually it is 'taboo' to use art that is used for standard releases for a steelbook. ie people want something unique for the steelbook edition. isnt that the point in having a different edition?

the only time people usually want the original art, is if the film is a classic and so want iconic art, a throw-back.

personally i think it would have been better to use something different to the amaray releases.

i will get the film anyway, but i just feel its a missed opportunity.

haha i really like pans labyrinth. the back of that is a disaster though. clashes with the front.

i guess there are so many different editions of pans labyrinth out there already, that was the only unique art left lol

It depends which 'people' you are referring to. Some collectors don't mind if amaray artwork is used. For me it's about selecting the best artwork and if that is the same artwork used on the amaray, then so be it. It's pointless using obscure art or creating new art if it better artwork is already there to be used.

Finally did a search. This was the one I'd choose. + the other dogs on the back instead of recycling the front.

btw, I agree that GOOD amaray art may look good on a Steelbook, and if it's the best alternative, then fine.

Personally, I like zavvi's choice more with the vibrant purple colour. I just don't know if it'll be embossed and the frame will cut out some of the characters :ohno:
