the art is ok. would have been nicer if the art was glossy and the colours more rich though.

i have a spanish pans labyrinth steel with an illustrated front cover already. its one of my favs steels.. partly because i love the film

It annoys me when people talk about how bad a steelbook is as if it's an objective fact.

Remember, we all have individual tastes.

everyone has their own taste, but there is such thing as bad design. ie if a design doesnt have balance or consistency, or composition, it is technically bad. Those who know design will know the difference between good and bad design.

In art a bad design is not as easy to spot by an untrained eye as it would be in the construction of a 3d object used for a purpose.. say a chair. you will know if a chair is badly designed if it collapses when you sit on it. bad art does also 'collapse', but its not as obvious...

this steelbook is unbalanced, that is a fact. the back doesnt 'go' with the front. the style is completely different, the medium is different etc it clashes and so doesnt work. its bad design.

if they had commissioned the artist who created the front art to do something to compliment it on the back, or use another piece which was in the same style as the front, the steel would have been amazing. as it is, its amazing front art, but that is where it ends.

It is an objective fact, this Steelbook is terrible! The front and rear artwork are a complete mismatch, the inside is decent but a little too dark, it has no title (why is it that some don't consider the title important?), it has no embossing or debossing and the finish is as cheap as they come.

If they had used the below art as the front and debossed the title, used the Drew Struzan artwork as the back and given it a gloss finish; we would be talking about one of the best Steelbook releases of the year.

Is inconsistent the same as bad though? I would say not, contrast can be beautiful and fully intentional.

Comparing a steelbook design to the design of a chair is an intrinsically flawed argument. The steelbook serves no pragmatic purpose but to hold a disk, and this steelbook does this. According to your argument, this steelbook is perfect. Practical design is objective, aesthetic design is subjective.

I see where you're coming from, but I disagree with you.

well I think let's agree to disagree, I'm for one who not so crazy about front and back... but one thing I'm sure that most of people here DO NOT just buy the steelbook because it holds the discs... if that's JUST the purpose of the steelbooks most of us wouldn't even be here...

Agreed. Steelbooks are different to chairs because their actual purpose is not their biggest seeking point.

But yes. Agree to disagree! This is not relevant to Pan's Labyrinth!
