Got mine today in excellent condition. No slashes dents etc. I have to say, it looks really nice!! Nice addition to my growing steelbook collection!

when they open the box they come in with a stanley knife probably
It can happen at any stage where they are unboxed in bulk. So yes, either at the shrink wrapping facility or when arriving into a retailer's warehouse.
Nothing more to it than an over-hasty warehouse employee with a Stanley knife, not taking enough care when the boxes are cut open. Very frustrating...

Indeed. A shame as a piece of polystyrene top/bottom of box would avoid a majority of this slashing.
