The trailers for this did absolutely nothing for me so had no interest in seeing this but I had nothing to do today and a couple of free cinema tickets so decided to check it out, so glad I did as it was absolutely fantastic

I actually love when you go into a film with hardly any expectations and you end up being blown away by what you see. Happens so rarely these days.

I think the reason why this delivered for me the way it did is that the trailers while giving a lot of the film away (as most trailers do these say) they don't begin to convey the heart of the film and the way it makes you feel while watching it

Gosling was brilliant as always ofc

Dune 3 is going to have to do a lot to beat this being my favourite film of the year

Really hope Manta pick this up as well but not sure they will given it's an Amazon MGM film unless the Sony element is enough for them to be able to do it under their licensing agreement. I've asked them the question anyway

For what it's worth, I've watched and watch pretty much everything Gosling is in and the first trailer for this did nothing for me but I still ended up loving it.

Saw it and… liked it. Not loved. I have to admit: I went in thinking it would be more hard sci-fi like The Martian. If I’d know I was going in to see a buddy movie set in space, I probably would have loved it. But, yeah, I thought it would be something else. I think the trailer mis-sold it. But, totally agree with others here, what it does well, it does hella well. And it’s got a great message…

Hell, maybe I did love it!

Gosling really is the most underrated comedic actor. Just got out of seeing this, loved it. Mrs has given the last 3 movies we've seen on the big screen 7.5/10 ... she gave this a 10! Anyone on the fence, do not wait for streaming btw, this has to be seen on biggest screen possible.

Saw it yesterday. It was a cool film, but not a masterpiece as the imdb score currently suggests...8.5?? Come on.
But I may have a vastly different taste from the average audience of this film - I've heard people say the karaoke scene is the best scene of the film and I thought it was easily the worst. Maybe because I can't stand that German actress they cast as Eva Stratt, who knows.
So all in all, it's a cool film, I'm glad a non-franchise film is making a big box office. But I probably don't need it on physical.

No. It's no masterpiece but considering the utter tripe we get these days it was a welcome breath of (space) air in the annual Hollywood conveyor belt of detritus.

Apocalypse Now has an 8.4, so has Dune Part Two. Green Mile is at 8.6. I'm sorry, but Project Hail Mary is just not on that level, it's certainly not a better film than Apocalypse Now or Dune 2, on any level. You can disagree on the 'masterpiece' status of those films mentioned, but still. This film was fun and all, but it really doesn't feel like an all-timer at all. Only time will tell of course, but I've had a pretty good track record of feeling where movies' legacies will go over the years pretty early. I honestly don't think people will be talking about this film much in 5 years, it'll be a fun blockbuster to watch now and again, the 4K will probably turn out to be a reference disc for the technical aspects, but that's it. 8.5. is vastly overstating it and I'm sure it will move down to around a 7.9 over time. I'd personally give it a 7 on a good day.

Fine for a day out in the theatre, sure, but I don’t think I need to see it again. I did rewatch The Martian after and was surprised by just how similar these two Weir stories are. Neither is my sci-fi cup of tea.

For me I think it was a fun and light-hearted sci-fi with great visuals and a really good performance from it's main actor. I didn't think it was a masterpiece but didn't think anyone said that personally. I love the likes of Arrival, Interstellar, 2001, but something a bit less bleak feels nice for a change. The conversation about the Metacritic rating is exactly why I dislike the review system and think scoring systems are just really pointless, that goes for both the movie and video-game industry. I really enjoyed this and can see it (for me) going into that sci-fi rotation with the above titles down the line.

My trick for having a good experience at the cinema is to go opening night.
Because everyone going then are most likely fans / excited to see the film and know theater educate.

Plus I usually do IMAX which is the most expensive option. Usually the movie morons don't want to pay the premium to go and not enjoy a film. haha

I made the mistake of seeing Ready or Not 2 this past week in a regular theater (only option)...
Its Spring Break right now. A bunch of idiot teenagers were in there. Kept running in and out of the theater and being loud / talking for no reason.
I kept hoping they would "paff" like the characters in the film. I wasn't that lucky.

While it's fair to have a personal opinion about Project Hail Mary comparing it to Apocalypse Now or Dune Part Two might miss the point of what makes it stand out. It's not trying to be a "masterpiece" in the same vein. It's more about fun, innovation, and a fresh approach to the sci-fi genre carried by its themes. Rating a film based purely on its legacy potential can overlook its impact in the moment, and PHM’s technical execution and narrative drive certainly resonate with audiences now. Is it one of my all time favorite films? No, but I put it in the same category as F1 or Top Gun Maverick. They are not groundbreaking but they accomplish what they set out to. Personally I prefer the Martian out of the two Weir movies. To me was PHM a masterpiece? No. Was it a great movie? Yes. That being said I also won’t discount that older films that are objectively better do suffer lower ratings for a variety of reasons which can be frustrating. Only time will tell, but it deserves the recognition it's getting for now.
