I don't think I've ever seen this thread!!

I don't really watch them with the commentary so I might give it a go, I am half way through it again though so it may be a while.

I would also need subs on for the commentary and I noticed it only has German subs with the steel :(

If I can't sleep I watch films with subs and it makes me sleepy. Was hoping this would be one of those films

Glad you enjoyed it. Only seen it once and loved it
It's very rare for me to watch films with commentary too, because I'd rather just rewatch the film again... but if it's a film/director I'm really in to and I want to know more about it/them, then I usually give the commentary a go. Hearing what NWR had to say about The Neon Demon has made me want to rewatch it again now that I know the true meaning behind certain things. Really wish he'd do one for Drive and Only God Forgives at some point. And whilst we're on the subject of commentaries... I can't wait to listen to Abrams' for The Force Awakens!

This was the second time I've watched Under the Skin and it's still just as mesmerising. Shocks me that Johansson accepted to do that role, but I'm glad she did, because she's amazing in it. :D

Oh, and yeah... now that you know this thread exists, it'd be great to see what you've been watching and how you rate them. ;)

How did you listen to the commentary then? Do you put it on but not watch the film like as a audio track listen? I only ask because you say you wana see it again now.

It's brillaint watching it again. So much foreshadowing. Particularly the club scene when they are watching the show and the way the gils look at Jesse, the toilet scene in the club and and the breakfast scene with the 3 girls talking about jesse. Very interesting what you notice.

I've listened to avengers commentary. A bit of age of ultron ( I read about something that whedon mentions and I wanted to know more so literally listened to about 20 mins) and the best commentary I've ever heard is method man and redman for how high lol. It's classic and they rip the film to shreds lol

Yeah I was amazed she accepted the role. Good on her, considering all the extras are non actors and had no script, had to sign stuff after the convos which interested me because if you knew who she was you was literally talking to Scarlett not knowing your making a film with her.
except the guy with the face. He's an actor

Will do now you shown me it

*spoilers ahead for those didn't watch The Neon Demon*
I didnt hear the commentary but i did read up some interviews with NWR. It was so well done i didnt even realize that 99% of the scenes contained mirror or reflection. It may actually be 100%. And at the club, as soon as she asked "food or sex?" i was like that GOTTA mean something. And at the end i was like 'oh...you meant literally'
And did you know NWF is color blind? LIKE WHAT!? :OMG:
I dont know how many times i can rewatch this though. I"m pretty sure i'll turn it off right before the last scene......:vomit:

He's a lucky guy though :p. Unfortunate that's his real face. And I too was surprised to read about the no script part. They did a great job on that.
But this movie had some REALLY slow moments. I dont mind Neon Demon slow, but certain points were even slower in Under the Skin.

Yeah also with the mirrors whenever she talks to ruby there's always an Infinate reflection of her and ruby is always in red. The lipstick she has on it red rum too. Love all that.

In the film thread I've put quite a lot on spoilers about the end and it blew me away. Especially the moon scene. I love it. Prefer it more the OGF and up there with drive for me

Yeah I knew he was colour blind. Crazy considering his films are the perfect colours.

Food and sex part, the Lethe girls says no she's dessert too. Also she's offered sex just before with you know who and turns that down so she becomes.......

The major foreshadowing for me when watchin it again is how interested they are in her being a virgin. They obviously need that for the ritual.

Also did you notice the stuffed cat at Ruby's place?

End I paid of massively for me. :)

And I loved abbey too Lee

Also one of the first films in forever I found Keanu naturally funny. And normal in a un normal role. If that makes sense. He was great

Yeah it's his real face, see a doc with him once, cool guy but it's horrible what he has to put up with from the public!

I loved under the skin but ive only seen it once and that was when I got the steel.
I could only watch it every 10 years or so and it defo more slower than demon and more depressing too even with the tone.

Neon demon is quickly becoming somthing I would watch 3 or 4 times a year (it's entered that group of films I love and can do that with - comfort films, my comfort films are quite dark though, mainly fincher films)

The acting, story, characters, tone, cinematography, music, colours are all perfect IMO (even if the story is a little basic for some)

(Nightcrawler, her, it follows, inherent vice, Birdman and revenant were some of the last films to have that complete package for me) need a steel for inherent. A proper package from PA or somthing (I even emailed WB about it ages ago - first and only time I've ever emailed a studio about trying to get them to do a steel lol)

Oh yes, the colour red every time ruby is in the scene. Red rum = murder, was an automatic giveaway.

Drive will always be #1 for me. I do prefer this more than OGF. OGF was a bit too symbolic for me. TND is perfect, but only thing i'm not a fan of is horror. Horror is not my favorite genre. It's not that i hate horror, i like horror movies but i cant watch them repeatedly. Unless there is a sci-fi blend. For example, The Cabin in the Woods, that movie i can watch many times. If NWF does a sci-fi or fantasy blend with his style of film making, i think i'll love it. But i'll definitely watch TND once more in the near future, just to pick up more stuff that i didnt the first time i watched it.

Was it a stuffed cat or puma?

Oh and Abbey Lee? So sexy. She has a cute side as well. I actually prefer her over Elle Fanning.
Keanu was definitely funny :LOL: I know perfectly what you mean by 'normal in a un-normal' role.

Nightcrawler is something i'd also rewatch many times and may be It Follows. But not the rest. Her is a one time watch. Birdman was fun to watch but didnt do anything for me. Revenant was a let down. I havent watched Inherent Vice. :)

They talk over the top of the movie... so you're basically just watching the movie with them whilst they talk about what we're seeing etc. The audio from the movie itself still plays, but obviously you can't really hear much of it because the commentary drowns most of it out (as it should, otherwise it'd be pointless lol).

Yeah man, I can't believe how many little details I missed the first time I saw it... like the three neon triangles symbolise the face of the Nemon Demon, which seems really obvious to me now. And even NWR comments on how Ruby is like a witch and Gigi and Sarah are her henchmen, which is pretty much what you said when we first discussed the film in the TND thread.

Haha those are the best sort of commentaries, where they're completely honest and rip in to the film. One commentary I really want to listen to, but I always end up just rewatching the film instead because it's so amazing, is Fight Club. Will definitely try and give that another go soon, and maybe even rewatch the film properly straight after lol.

That's one of the things I found really cool about Under the Skin, how she was just walking/driving around Scotland and interacting with people who had no clue who she was... although you do notice a few people staring when she's walking through the city centre, like they're thinking "she looks familiar" or something.

I think UTS is another one I'd be interested in hearing the commentary for actually, especially as a lot of the film still confuses me lol.

Nice one mate!

@AlienKing @Flloydo Just reading your convo with each other and one thing I wanted to mention is how NWR repeats a few times during the commentary that The Neon Demon is a mixture of genres, but mostly a comedy, which I'm glad he pointed out, because I found a lot of it quite funny and felt I was wrong to laugh at particular scenes until he said that lol. He even suggested that it has hints of sci-fi, like the bit where she's in the motel room and the hands appear pushing through the wall is meant to symbolise the womb and her being reborn in to the Neon Demon... I think he also mentions a few other things, but I can't remember them at the moment.

I guess i can see the comedy side of it. But it's not your everyday comedy. It's a mixture of horror-comedy. Which is nice to see.

Interesting bit about sci-fi, i'll have to watch again to see that.

Yeah, despite me finding certain scenes funny (in a dark humour kind of way), I still consider the film a horror/thriller more than anything.

I do love a good horror, or a good comedy horror but I consider this a thriller that turns into a horror with sci fi moments

I love cabin in the wood and seen it a lot but I've never looked at it to have the sci fi blend but I suppose your right.

It's a stuffed puma I think, a bit like the one that trashes her room. I have a theory that either ruby using black magic or witchcraft sent the puma to her or she is also the Puma like a power animal morphing kind of thing (because of what ruby really is and what she can do)

Man I fell in love with Lee in that film. Stunning girl. She's in quite a few films coming out soon.

There was a few funny moments with the other girls and how nasty they are (especially Gigi and her bitchiness and spiteful side and also the way they mug her off or when she gets the waitress to reel of the specials - I kind that darkly funny) but Keanu was the humour in this film for me

I reccomended inherent vice, amazing cast, weird story, really funny too and it's like a stoner PI film. Classic

I love the dark humour in nightcrawler too, I actualy laugh out loud at that film, Lou scares me
Too. Fantastic film

Lol you doughnut, I know how commentary works, lol I mean how do you watch it? The way you said it made me think you listen to it as a audio track whilst your maybe doing something else. Whereas I know most watch the film and listen to the commentary.
When you said it I actualy thought it was a good idea to have it on in the background and listen to it like a audio tape instead of watching the film again whilst I'm on my phone or drawing etc

The triangles symbolise the face of the neon demon? How does that work.
I get that the colour change and her kissing her reflection is her changing and embracing vanity and turning darker but I'm not sure how they symbolise her face.

Oh he does say that about ruby then. I see it that Sarah (abbey Lee) is a grade above Gigi in the henchmen role, like she's done this before with ruby. But Gigi no, it's her first time plus the first time a younger girl has been a threat to her career

I have actually heard a bit of fight club. Think it's fincher and Norton. Can't remember if Pitt is there but it was interesting
Some really interesting things about fight club and how they filmed bits and some troubles fincher was getting from the studio on what he could use and not use. Very cool

See the hints of sci fi for me are the catwalk scenes and that world she pops into when the demon is taking over. Interesting because I didn't look at the wall part like that, just thought that was her paranoia in her dreams kind of thing. Someone trying to grab her like she dreams about Keanu

Would never of gotten re born from that

I'll definately have to listen to this now

Ha I did wonder why you asked, since you said you've listened to commentaries before. But nah, I sat and watched the film with the commentary playing over the top, which you need to do really to understand what the hell they're referring to lol. What I meant though, was that I'd like to rewatch the film properly again now that I know more about the true meaning of things etc.

I don't know for sure, but all NWR said was something along the lines of "there's the Nemon Demon" once this particular image appeared on the screen...

1.png

...so I just assumed it was probably meant to look like a face - the top two triangles being the eyes and the bottom triangle the mouth. It made sense to me anyway, since triangles only appear when Jesse is "transforming".

Oh yeah, Gigi is definitely new to the whole thing. Sarah seemed more threatened by Jesse throughout, so I reckon she had it all planned from the start... whereas Ruby only decided once she got rejected by Jesse near the end. It makes you wonder how many times they've done it before though!

I think there's a number of commentaries for Fight Club, but the one I started listening to a while back had Fincher, Norton, Pitt and Bonham Carter. Think I'm definitely going to give it a go tomorrow now... I've really been in the mood to watch it since we started talking about it. :D

Haha same... Neon Demon certainly isn't a full on comedy. I think NWR was probably half joking when it said that though, but in a weird way I do now see the comedy side to it. Your interpretation of the wall scene is pretty much exactly what I first thought too, but after hearing NWR explain it, it made a lot more sense.

It's funny but I must be the only one who hates Toy Story. One of the few Pixar films I hate but I actually like the two follow ups!
When did you first see it? Could have something to do with why you're not a fan maybe. For me it was the first Pixar film I ever saw (probably because it was the first to be released lol), and so it made a huge impression on me... plus it paved the way for similar films. The effects look quite blocky now, and I didn't realise just how creepy looking the humans are until rewatching it, but the story holds up, which is what counts IMO. A lot of people seem to prefer 2 or 3 though (or at least according to those I follow on Letterboxd), so you're certainly not alone.

I first saw it in the cinema and it just didn't grab me and I'm usually a big fan of animation. The first pixar animation I saw were the desk lamps and I found them very very funny!

How dare you rate toy story 3 the same as 2!!!!!! Toy story 2 should be no more than 2 n half stars lol

1 & 3 five stars

Is day and night the cruise film? It's knight if so :p

Lol yeah I did wonder too

Ah ok, I don't think it's her face (but il come back to that) if that's the scene when she's told she's closing the show and if the moment he mentions it in the commentary is when it turns red then he means that. Jesse is blue as Jesse, the naive slightly scared rabbit in the headlights girl and when she embraces her beauty and vanity it turns red, making her the neon demon. After that she's a changed girl as you know. The first seven after that is her looking stunning, messy hair, a bit dirty and confident waking through the curtain beads thing.

But if he is referring to that as the ace like you think then maybe it's a symmetry thing and the perfect face. There is that test (I've done it) where you face should be a perfect fit for a certain amount of triangles and other shapes. Plus his films are perfect in that sense with symmetry especially in this with the cat walk scenes

So yeah lol

I can't work out who's more threatened tbh , Sarah looses a job to her, wants her beauty. Even asks what's it like. And some other moments but Gigi is really spiteful when Jesse is acting innocent like the "and that's a compliment" to which Gigi replies "aren't your parents dead?" And at lunch (the 3 girls - not Jesse) when ruby mentions that top guy has put jesse in the show Gigi's defence is "she won't last long" and also after jesses becomes the neon demon and takes her BF to that bar to meet Gigi and the it others Gigi is humiliated in front of Jesse for having work done but calls Jesse perfect.

My theory is Sarah was thinking about it at he club. When the strobe lighting is going off all 3 girls look at her at different times but Sarah's look to me is like she's thinking "ok we could do our thing to her" plus in the bathroom before they are asking her how many people she's slept with. Now to me the ritual has to be to a Virgin. That's usually a standard thing with what they do in other films and folklore (whatever you call it) plus I see NWR attracted to that idea.
Also Sarah is humiliated on the catwalk barely wearing nothing and loses the job to Jesse. She then goes to suck her blood. She's jumping ahead of herself there. Kinda giving herself away and what's she's capable of

Ruby for me decides after Jesse has the gold shoot and is waiting for her outside. Plus she's just witnessed one guy flabbergasted by her and tells eveyone it's a closed set. This new youn girl out of knowwhere is taking it by storm by doing nothing. Ruby sees that as this girl is the perfect vessel.
Now after that scene is when the 3 girls go to lunch like I mentioned before. When you watch it again, notice how Ruby and Sarah are with each other compared to Gigi, Gigi is clueless to what these girls do. You can tell Sarah and Ruby have a better bond and Ruby's eyes say to Sarah. We are doing it

That's how I see it and when they decide. Both girls decide at different times but Sarah needs Ruby. It's Ruby's call. She's the real witch.

Ruby getting rejected by Jesse at the end was purely confirmation jesses a virgin. That's all it is. She was getting ready for it in the morgue to try it on with Jesse. But she is also attracted to her still.

Once she new she's a virgin it all kicked off.

I wana watch fight club now, it's one of my favs anyway and that's a good commentary lineup. Plus it was nortons last greatest film as a main character (he's great in moonrise kingdom, Budapest, hotel, hulk and others) but as a main character and fronting a film that was his greatest and last

How dare you rate toy story 3 the same as 2!!!!!! Toy story 2 should be no more than 2 n half stars lol

1 & 3 five stars

Is day and night the cruise film? It's knight if so :p
It's a strange trilogy of films... everyone seems to have a different favourite. I know someone who insists that the second film is the best, whereas it's the weakest one for me, although it's still better than 2 1/2 stars man... it's worth at least 3 for the Star Wars reference alone!

The third film is great, but overall there was nothing super special about it... it's basically just more of the same stuff - the toys get split up and go on a mission to find one another again (same as in the previous two films), and the villain is someone they originally thought was good (same as in the second film). The story was still enjoyable though, mainly because of the humour and the fact they introduced new characters like Barbie and Ken, who were hilarious lol. I especially like how it ended too... kind of makes me sad that they're doing a fourth film now, as they ended it perfectly with 3 IMO.

Nah, not the Cruise film mate... it's a Pixar short.

Will reply to the other part of your post later by the way. ;)
