Predators is an amazing entry into the Predator franchise. The acting is probably the best in the entire series, though some minor plot holes keep it from being perfect. It's incredibly fun -- my own major concern being that the hunters were a lot easier to take down in this than the original two films. Nevertheless, kudos to Robert Rodriguez and Nimród Antal for making a great Predator film.

It's always rumoured that it was in the original 1st showing premier but detailed research has come to the conclusion it wasn't even in the film then.
Believe it or not, yesterday was the first time I've ever seen the original Kong, so this was the first I'd heard of the Lost Pit sequence... not sure how true it is, but this site gives some details on it.

The most surprising thing is how well Adrien Brody aquits himself as an action character.

He is a great actor, imo. And as you know well, a great actor should be able to handle any role.
He caught my attention years ago, when he played a very memorable role in a criminally underseen gem: Steven Soderbergh's KING OF THE HILL. Without question my favorite film of Soderbergh's. (His second).
I'll never forget that Laserdisc either. Soderbergh was so anal about making sure people watched his movie CORRECTLY, that it included calibration glasses and a section on how to calibrate the picture and the sound!!

Here's another clump of movies I've seen in the last few weeks.

Logan - My thoughts are in the Logan specific page

Headshot - The new Indonesian action movie with multiple Raid actors coming back but without the normal Raid director. Nowhere near as good as the Raid 1 or 2, but still pretty good as an action movie. I recently saw both John Wick 2 and Logan, so Headshot had no chance against those two action powerhouses. The martial arts fight scenes were well done and stylish, but lacked the bad ass final climaxes Gareth Evans does so well. Story was pretty bland and thin, but the action is why you'd watch this movie and it's still very good. Just not an top tier action movie. FYI - this is brand new, but you can rent/buy this on Amazon/VUDU.

Hidden Figures - Solid, but predictable movie. It's similar to the Imitation Game except with more likeable characters and a good commentary of social/race issues. The actual science/math of how these ladies were able to help NASA wasn't explained very well, but it likely would have bogged the pacing down. Great performances all around and an interesting story, but I considered this good not great.

Lion - Decent movie, but the middle act drags and the last act feels very rushed. The little boy should have been nominated over Dev Patel in my opinion, but there is a very good emotional ending to this movie. It's a good movie overall, but it's ultimately forgettable.

Son of Saul - Before each Oscar show, I try to watch the previous year's winner in the foreign language category. Last year it was Son of Saul, which is a Hungarian movie about a man working in a Jewish concentration camp in WWII. As expected, this was a very bleak, grim movie with a good performance by the leading actor, who rarely ever speaks. There's a ton of tracking shots in this movie and it's very impressive what they are able to do within the story. The movie itself is very good, albeit extremely sad and depressing. Worthy of the Oscar win last year and I enjoyed this much more than the previous winner, the Great Beauty.
