Resistance 3 set in New York City, says retailer

Online retailer eStarland has updated its site with the rather conspicuous listing of Insomniac Games’ Resistance 3, claiming the shooter will be taking the fight against the Chimera to New York City.

The listing reads: "Continue the fight against the Chimera invasion in Resistance 3, as the battle moves to New York City and humanity makes its final stand."

Regular readers may recall that a billboard for Resistance 3 was spotted on the film set of Sony’s Battle: Los Angeles back in October 2009, and depicted a silhouette of the Statue of Liberty on the game’s logo – sounds like New York could be on the cards after all.

In addition, Sony distributed a survey in March of this year quizzing consumers on whether they would buy Resistance 3 if it were made, fuelling yet more speculation that it's only a matter of time until Insomniac lifts the lid on the sequel.

Huzzah, after months of hinting the damn thing, we'll finally be getting it. I wouldn't expect to see it this year though, seeing as it was announced on such short notice. Lets just hope they don't make the same mistake by launching it close to Gears.

Resistance 3 out in 2011, won't be at PAX Prime

Developer Insomniac Games has confirmed that PS3-exclusive blaster Resistance 3 will be released in 2011.

Quizzed by a fan on Twitter as to when we’d see the shooter, the company replied, “Resistance 3 is a 2011 release.”

The sequel was announced after months of rumors at Sony’s GamesCom press conference last week, though at the time Insomniac neglected to put a date on the project.

In addition, the firm also revealed that Resistance 3 won’t be showing its face at PAX Prime next weekend, as the studio instead wants to focus on upcoming co-op outing Ratchet & Clank: All4One.

Fortunately, the company later teased that there was "more to come" on Resistance 3, though didn't specify when we could expect more information.

Resistance 3 Info

  • Protagonist Joseph Capelli has started a family with Susan, the stepsister of former hero Nathan Hale.
  • Malikov is alive.
  • The weapon wheel is back
  • A two-player cooperative campaign will be present, with Capelli, Malikov and John Harper being the key characters.
  • Players will be able to battle in an African Prison as part of one of the game’s multiplayer maps.
  • Chimeran plant life explodes when shot, which is representative of the fact the world is undergoing drastic changes.
  • Enemies will boast enhanced AI, while Capelli will be able to climb over walls and through windows, etc.
  • A new weapon has been confirmed called The Mutator. Its primary function is to shoot a biological mist that causes boils to appear on foes, which can then pop and harm nearby Chimera. Players can also use it to make their enemies turn against each other.
  • Returning weapons include the Magnum, Shotgun, Bullseye, Auger and Carbine. They’re also upgradable the more you use them, with other weaponry such as grenades sporting a more improvised look to them.
  • A vaccine exists that may be able to cure the Chimeran virus
  • Insomniac is keen to improve upon the online component and make it more organised in comparison to Resistance 2’s 60-player matches.
  • Surviving humans are turning to acts of cannibalism due to the lack of available food.

Resistance 3 is due out exclusively on PlayStation 3 in 2011.

Insomniac doesn't think Resistance 3 will be the last in the series

Insomniac Games boss Ted Price has hinted that we haven’t seen the last of the Resistance series following the release of the third instalment on PlayStation 3 next year.

Quizzed by the chaps at Game Informer as to whether or not Resistance 3 would mark the end of the franchise, Price replied, “I don’t think so. I think Resistance 3 is a story within the Resistance universe that can be expanded upon.”

“Doors will be shut, but they won’t be slammed.”

Resistance 3 sees players hopping in to the shoes of Joseph Capelli, who’s since shacked up with former protagonist Nathan Hale’s stepsister Susan and is now trying to rescue his son and accomplish some “other” unknown mission.

The game throws in a heap of improvements over its predecessors, including the return of the weapon wheel, the ability to climb over walls and hop through windows, upgrade weapons and much more. They’ll also be a co-op campaign, though unlike Resistance 2’s it won’t feature an alternate story path.

Resistance 3 is scheduled for release exclusively on PS3 in 2011.

Along with being brown, the game is noisy and scary as hell. This is a near derelict town, covered in dust and debris, and the Chimera assault coincides with terrifying gale force winds.

With regard to the short, intense burst of the game on show, scary seems to be the operative word. This is no linear corridor but an open town square, complete with crumbling buildings, outlying garages and makeshift shelters.

Enemies approach from all sides, with Hybrids clawing their way over chainlink fences and attacking with rifles from rooftops while Longlegs skitter and leap from one vantage point to another. It's a 360 degree onslaught with no single route to safety, no obvious order in which to deal with the attackers. You just have to take aim and join the rest of the refugees in defending your home.

There are still eight empty weapon slots to be filled by the full game. Since there's a new levelling-up system that can evolve your weapon's abilities as you play, it seems likely that Insomniac's passion for inventive mayhem will be indulged once more.

What stands out from this fierce little skirmish is just how much freedom you have to approach the battle in your own way. The map is small, but packed with nooks and crannies. Most buildings can be entered and explored to find new vantage points, while an ammo crate for infinite reloads keeps you focussed on the centre of the map where the action is hottest.

There's been a tendency in recent years for shooters to force feed players with pre-planned "cool moments", as if developers don't trust us to make their game look good. Resistance 3 seems to represent the opposite, with a large chaotic situation in an open environment and a toybox that lets you create your own action movie moments through ambient play.

For solo players (...) Insomniac seems intent on offering the best of both worlds - the pace and action of classic FPS titles of old blended with the freedom and customisation of more modern entries in the genre. Whether they can pull it off over a full campaign remains to be seen, but this small but savage taster packs a serious punch.

Resistance 3 Multiplayer Revealed, Beta Later This Year

Greetings from the PlayStation.Blog.Lounge here at the fabulous W Hotel, across the street from the Game Developers Conference in downtown San Francisco. As this post goes live, we are revealing our all-new multiplayer for Resistance 3. We’ve said all along we wanted Resistance 3’s MP mode to bring the best of both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2’s MP and co-op modes, and you’re about to see just how we’ve managed to do that.

5492354643_6f686570b6.jpg

Resistance 3 will feature 16-player Human vs. Chimera deathmatch and objective-based modes set in locations across the globe. That may seem somewhat jarring after the 40 and 60-player mayhem in RFOM and R2. Rest assured though, our biggest motivation in determining our new player count was the fun times that we and the community had on maps like RFOM’s Busyard and Rooftops, as well as the Bayou House and San Francisco maps in Resistance 2.

Resistance 3 will offer a very deep and customizable progression system. Players can create their own progression paths through multiplayer, spending their hard-earned points to customize loadouts that fit their unique playstyle. We learned a lot from Resistance 2 co-op in terms of giving players the ability to create specific roles in a team and level up different abilities – which you will see with the various active tactical and support abilities, as well as the new personal and combat attributes.

5492949930_8169ceb837.jpg

For instance – each player can choose and level different support abilities – such as a Bubble Shield, Ammo Beacon (give ammo to teammates) or Radar Beacon (enhance your team’s radar). There are also tactical abilities you can use against your enemies, such as the Doppelganger (projects an image of you nearby to distract enemies) or Dash (an explosive burst of speed to evade enemy attacks).

Furthermore, each player can select and level a personal attribute and a combat attribute. These range from the ability to have leapers bust out from your corpse, to start with more weapons in your arsenal, to reloading or firing at a faster rate. You will be able to truly customize your character loadout to fit your own unique playstyle in Resistance 3.

We’ve been working on this new direction for close to two years now, polishing and refining our maps. We’re having a ton of fun playing Resistance 3 in the office every day. We will be bringing a multiplayer beta to PSN later this year, so stay tuned to our newsletters (Check today’s for the first news on Insomniac’s Community Day on March 29th!), Full Moon Show podcast, Twitter feed and Facebook page for all the latest updates!

Resistance 3 Will Support 3D, PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter Thanks to Community Demand

5239994990_ff4af9c03b.jpg

Greetings from the fabulous Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, where we’re in the middle of Insomniac’s 3rd Annual Community Day. We’ve been letting fans get some of their first hands-on gameplay with Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. We’ve also been showing cool demos and producing Q&As to bring you in the form of Full Moon Show podcasts in the coming weeks.

That said, today we are finally able reveal, due to overwhelming community demand, that Resistance 3 will support Stereoscopic 3DTV. Furthermore, those of you who are enjoying the precision of the PlayStation Move motion controller with your copies of Killzone 3 and the SOCOM 4 Beta will be delighted to know that Resistance 3 will also support PlayStation Move and the sharp shooter. After Killzone 3 launched, we heard a massive amount of positive feedback, and were inundated with requests to support both PlayStation Move and sharp shooter. So we’re glad to be able to finally confirm the news!

As you can see, our founder Ted Price and Resistance 3 Creative Director Marcus Smith are so pumped that they found 3D glasses and grabbed sharp shooters to pose for a photo (though we had to remind them that they need the cool high-tech stereoscopic 3D glasses to actually play, not those old “red-blue” ones).

Resistance 3 hits your PS3 and 3D TV on September 6th, so have your sharp shooter ready! In the meantime, if you want to hear about all the latest happenings at our community day, follow us on Twitter (search for hashtag #InsomniacGames for some live contests!) to see or like us on Facebook. We’ll be posting audio and video from today’s community event in the weeks to come, so keep checking in for all the latest.

I hope R3 isn't as bland as i felt R2 was. For some reason R2 just didn't grab me like R1 did. I still enjoyed it, don't get me wrong. Just give me a nice good and long story mode. I can care less about multiplayer in most games.
