Selling Empty Steelbooks - Worth It or Not?

Well, time moves on and a job is still not forthcoming, so more stuff has to go. :tear: Now I've not got many steelbooks, and I've only got ones where I loved the film, so I'd rather not sell the film just to have to hunt down a cheap non-steel copy - the idea is to make a little money.

So, as per the title: would selling the steelbooks empty (or just with the DVD in the case where I have a double pack) be viable?

I need straight opinions here, folks. (If there's enough interest, I'll put them all up on HDN first.)

All my SB are open with no J-cards, but have clear, plastic, rigid slipcases to protect the steelbook.

Sell everything, don't keep the disc. I'll show you why (example):

You sell the complete set, you get $30
You sell an empty steelbook, meaning less interested buyers, you get $20

Then you need to spend another $1 to put your disc in a blu-ray case.
Meaning keeping the disc will cost you $11. And you won't have the cover with the information etc.

How much does a standard release these days cost? Probably $5 new, and used $3.

So you're better off selling the complete set. It's probably faster too and less complicated.
You might get a buyer who didn't read the description well and he/she will complain, file a claim with PayPal, want a refund, bla bla bla (yes, such people exist. Actually someone once left negative feedback, he complaint the item not arriving fast enough. It was a 1 cent (0.01) item and he paid $1 for postage instead of $3.... ).

I think you would be able to sell plenty of them with just the steelbooks. I replace a lot of the movies anyway (or already own the movies and just want steels.
On top of that, there is always a need for steelbook "parts" for mods and such, so I am sure plenty of people would be interested, myself included.

Honestly selling just the steel can be a bit hit and miss. I have seen empty steels sell for the standard going price, and then also seen them go for not much at all. It depends, if they are back catalogue releases like zavvi etc. then sell with the film, as they wont be worth much on their own, but if it is something harder to find then going withoit the film mighy be viable, however if you have something like thor or Star Trek etc then sell with the films because if you get rid of the J card, how is anyone suppose to know what country the release is from without the discs?

Hope thats of some help, i guess the best option would be to give it a try first and see what happens. Im sure you will find many people intereasted over HDN

Good luck :)

Thanks for the advice, folks. After all that, the truck failed its MOT on some fiddly-thus-expensive bits, so its all moot. Most of my collection, such as it is, has to go.

If I could pay 75% of the market rate for OOP steels like back to the future, jurassic park etc etc. I would be all over it!

Having already bought ALL my favourite movies once, an empty steel is attractive!
