US News:

Watch out! The "Sharknado" could soon blow through your local movie theater. Regal Entertainment and NCM Fathom Events announced Friday that some 200 theaters will be hosting midnight showings of the made-for-TV movie "Sharknado" on August 2. The film, which aired on SyFy earlier this month, swept through Twitter and social media, as celebrities and journalists obsessed over its ridiculous concept – a tornado blows sharks through the streets of Los Angeles – and its throwback, C-list cast, which includes Tara Reid and Ian Ziering.

Ultimately, the disaster film debuted to a paltry 1.4 million viewers. Nevertheless, the hashtag "#sharknado" stirred up 5,000 tweets per minute at its peak during the premiere – the most Tweeted about program of that evening and a record for NBCUniversal – which has execs believing "Sharknado" has the makings of a cult classic.

"You know how audiences have had fun with 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' over the years. If the Internet reactions to this film are any indication, then our moviegoers are primed and ready to enjoy 'Sharknado' larger than life in cinemas," Regal's Digital Marketing Director Chris Sylvia said in a released statement.

Regal's Chief Marketing Officer Ken Thewes added, "There's just something epic about watching these huge beasts on the big screen with your friends and family. The crowd reactions will make for a memorable experience in our theaters."

SyFy has also announced a "Sharknado" sequel, which is slated for 2014. Set in New York, the meteorologically-propelled sharks will be taking a bite out of the Big Apple.
