No they don't. US NTSC and European PAL do. :rolleyes:
blu-ray discs operate at 24 frames per second. dvds, on the other hand, have a frame rate of 25 frames per second. therefore, the running time of a dvd is about 4% shorter than its blu-ray counterpart.

nope, both the same cut. maybe it's a german thing that dvds and blurays have a different running time.
If a film is 98 mins. It's 98 mins. - the only time that would change is if the film is sped up or slowed down.
the only time this occurs is when PAL video does a 4% speedup on films shot NTSC - or when something is in the PAL format and NTSC slows it down 4%.
PAL= 25 FPS
NTSC=24 FPS
This occurance only happened with VHS and DVD. Blu ray players had to conform with muliple frame rate options, so this does not happen with blu ray.

4% of 98 Min. = 3 mins. 55 seconds. Which gives you the DVD PAL speedup runtime of 94 Mins.
the DVD is a PAL speedup.

the earlier Koch German DVD confirms the runtime and the PAL speedup:
  • R2 Limited Edition Germany- Koch Media (94:34 PAL).

Different runtimes due to different discs "don't make no sense."

How can a movie play faster with the same scenes and dialogue? Is the action faster? Is the dialogue spoken or heard slightly faster?

If this is the case then maybe they can speed things up faster so that I can watch 2 hour movies in an hour and a half.
For that reason I would watch the DVD every time.

that's common knownledge that dvds have a shorter running time.
Actually Blu rays can conform to many frame rates.
only DVDs that are in the PAL format are 25 FPS.
if a movie is 98 mins in 24 FPS NTSC on Blu ray - the DVD conterpart is also 98 mins on 24 FPS DVD.
if that same movie is transferred to PAL in the UK or Germany - the runtime will change.
only PAL DVDs in PAL territories have a frame rate of 25 FPS.
all NTSC terrirories have DVDs and Blu rays in 24 FPS.
SO, any DVD of any movie you buy in NTSC territories will always have the exact same runtime as the Blu ray.
Only in Region B and Region C countries will the film's running time get altered due to frame rate speedups.

Both the DVD and Blu ray of SOLDIER here are the same cut - the DVD is just running 4% faster.
(and will have the chipmunk effect!)
