I really like this art, and I don't own the movie yet, so I'm in..... But the special features has me worried that this is the old old Blu-ray and not the restored disc that came out in 2015.
It's a great image from one of the original posters ...
(with the strategically placed knee doing a similar job to the "DC" logo on one of the "Aquaman" steelbook mock-ups)
...reprising the colour and title style also of the Saul Bass posters . . . his artwork not so much:-
As for the historical and filmic inaccuracies of the naked poster imagery not much can be said apart from the obvious:-
a) OK, so it's been a while since I watched the film but I certainly don't remember Kirk and Woody doing the gladiatorial thing naked . . . talk about dangerous sports . . . where circumcision would be the least of injuries inflicted had gladiators fought naked ... least they would need for protection would be these early granddad style Y-front pants.
b) As far as I remember it was the Greeks more than the Romans that celebrated nakedness - with their naked Olypians and their oiled wrestlers - so the image of naked gladiators is as mad as a barrel of frogs.
Granted, there's the infamous (and cringeworthy) scene of ****-eroticism in the bath-house (that seems to go on for ever) - reinstated and restored with Anthony Hopkins voicing Laurence Olivier's part - but as far as that topic is concerned that's all I remember.
Thanks to the gorgeous finish the red really pops making the new steelbook maybe not as interesting as the previous matte steelbook from 2015 but certainly more dramatic-looking ... and looking at the two same period gladiatorial classics side by side it's clear to see the similar style of both releases / re-releases:-
Classic 1960 poster art on the SPARTACUS 1st steelbook edition -------------------------------- + ------------------classic 1959 poster art on the 1st steelbook edition of BEN-HUR -----------------------------------------I
... although would have preferred this *1974 SPARTACUS artwork to have been embossed (title and figure) on this the 2nd edition in the UK (as in Germany) . . . if only to go better with the embossed BEN-HUR 2nd edition (UK etc.):-
