Official announcement from Star Wars.com:

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

Saw it at midnight. I thought it was good, not great. Gotta say I preferred Rogue One and even TFA to this.

For me it definitely feels like the middle of a trilogy. Moves the story along but doesn't really resolve anything.

Got this sweet poster from the IMAX though

Loved It!!!

A few surprises and a couple of scenes that could've been done better , but some jaw dropping moments :OMG: and had a few in the cinema in tears of joy, laughter and sadness. Ain't gonna lie I had tears in my eyes when Leia was on screen :(
Need to watch it again on IMAX

So, just saw this and don't know what I thought of it to be honest. This is no Empire Strikes Back that's for sure. I'd love some others who saw it to give their opinions and see what they thought of it also. There's some stuff I want to get off my chest so here goes........

I feel like I'm wanting to like it more than I actually did. Something feels really off about this for me. First off the 'humorous' bits felt way out of place (the whole 'comical' discussion between Hux and Poe at the start for example was more like something out of Spaceballs!) and Luke throwing the lightsabre over his shoulder when Rey handed it to him was just fan servicing after the way The Force Awakens ended and felt a bit cringey. And WTF was going on with Leia flying through space like Superman? Seriously? I don't know if that was a last minute re-write to give her less screen time following her sudden death last year, but it was ridiculous. If she's that powerful why didn't she train to become a Jedi knight?

This is the longest running Star Wars film to date at two and a half hours, but the whole subplot involving Benicio Del Toros character served no real purpose and could just as easily have been axed entirely from the whole movie and wouldn't really be missed. And the movie wouldn't have felt as dragged out in the middle. That whole Casino planet sequence felt forced and when we briefly re-visit it at the end I was confused. Who was that kid supposed to be? Again just felt like they didn't know how to end and tacked it on there at the end.

No mention of The Knights Of Ren or what became of them after making a rather big deal of them in the first movie. And what was Snokes story? Andy Serkis publicly claimed he wasn't a Sith. So what was he then? Where did he come from? Nothing on this.

Another major question from the first film that was a major let down here also was Rey's parentage. Turns out they were nobodys. Peasant traders who just traded her for cash and never returned. That's it! It feels like JJ Abrams set up all these things from the first movie but they couldn't be arsed addressing them in any great detail in this one.

I guess that's what happens when studios constantly interfere and switch between directors and their personal visions.....

I'm with you on a lot of these points.

I'm seeing it again on Saturday and hopefully I'll enjoy it more then but the whole film just seemed disjointed in places.

Yup have to agree on these as well, but still loved it :)
Leia doing Marry Poppins was a WTF??? moment for me. The movie could've been shorter, but still questions unanswered and bit of a let down in regards to Rey's parents.

Thanks. It's not just me then.

Feel a bit disappointed after waiting the whole year for it. Disjointed is definitely a good way to describe it.

Good film if not disappointing at the same time, shame as I hoped all 3 films of Rey's arc would be equally as good as one another but I didn't enjoy this anywhere near as much as I did TFA

7/10

I also saw it last night. No spoilers here so don't worry.

A good entry. Not a great entry but still a lot of fun with a few surprises and many nods but i just feel like im watching retreated material of the original trilogy.

Ridley shines in this film and a new character shows a lot of heart.

Go out and watch it!
