Creature design is nice in this film, and I'm glad they used less CGI, or at least I think they did. There are also a few fun moments of a small country town folks' life, but mostly it's all very basic and made primarily for children, even though with a good message of caring for the animals and keeping a family together.

The opening shows you signs of curfew times, and warnings of creatures, etc, setting up a kind of community like in Shyamalan's The Village, but then abandons it all and concentrates on just one ugly girl, both of whose parents are batshit crazy.

I did like it a lot and can't say that for a whole lot that came out this year. The story is creative and the cinematography and production design is original, and the puppetry is great. But the protagonist is hard to like (nothing to do with her looks) and her parents make no sense, and the ending is rather weak even though it spoon-fed us a interesting concept but didn't pull it off well. ★7/10 from me.
