Netflix Is Developing a Live-Action ‘Legend of Zelda’ Series

“The Legend of Zelda,” one of the most popular videogame series of all time, is in the works as a television show at Netflix.

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

The “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery, like “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings,” but typically with a more light-hearted, kid-friendly tone.

Netflix is said to be working closely with Nintendo, the Japanese game developer that has made about 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.

Nintendo is very protective of its intellectual property and has allowed few adaptations over the years. An animated “Legend of Zelda” series ran for just one season in 1989. A 1993 movie based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” was an infamous bomb.

As it is still seeking a writer to work on the series, Netflix has a long road to travel before a “Legend of Zelda” series actually becomes a reality. It’s also possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it gets off the ground.

So many Zelda fans out there, so hopefully they won't be disappointed :D I'll certainly be checking it out being Nintendo related :D

They have got a lot of hard work to do, making a TV series out of something like Zelda is going to be hard. It will be very hard to please fans, especially when it comes to Link (Link speaking is a huge sore spot for some fans, some fans would love to hear him speak...some fans not so much...). I hope they go down the route of it being more focused on non major characters, heck even make up some new people just for the show, perhaps focus it on some of the Hylian Knights (as in the games it seems that the only person that actually does something is Link)

Comparing it to Game of Thrones is a bit stupid imo, as the Zelda series is nothing like Game of Thrones...in ANY way

Well hopefully Nintendo wont pull the plug on this (as they have done on various projects before).

Personally would have picked Metroid to become a TV series as it could make a great sci fi epic, but nintendo seem to hate Metroid lately.

I'mm very wary of this one.
Properties based on videogames really struggle when moved to the medium of TV or Film.
Using a non speaking character at least gives the creators more of a blank canvas, even though it may upset some fans.

'T was a little strange to first read about this a while ago. Seeing how Netflix has taken care of their own shows, i wouldn't be too reluctant to say this might turn out pretty good. However, i do agree that video games don't translate to movies very well, so an ongoing series is arguably even trickier. It's most certainly never going to please everyone, but it would be nice to see the majority of Zelda fans enjoying it, and appreciating it.
