Grail Updates - 9th May 2013

After a long deliberation I have updated the grail list. I have been following and talking to members about grails steels and this is what I class in value order as of today.

The notable ones is that TDK FNAC has taken 4th spot now leaving IM FS in fifth and T2 2.0 in Sixth.

FNAC steels have retained their value and TDK FNAC is the rarest FNAC steel in France and sold for values over taking IM FS and T2 2.0.

IM FS has picked up in value again over taking T2 2.0. Appears these two steels are always in a constant battle lol.

I have decided to place Iron Man 2 Japan in 7th spot behind 2.0. Extremely rare and hard to come by it will demand a high price. Similar to Thor JP, although very rare, IM2 JP is in a battle between the two :)

CA TW very rare but not as rare as the above, has dipped slightly and moved off the top ten list. This does not mean the steel has no potential to rise again. It is the elite of the CA avengers steel and takes pride just being outside the top ten.

ID4 error has moved off the top ten steels as it has not gained in value.

Please note, ranking Asian steels such as: IM2 JP, THOR JP, THOR KOR, CA TW, T4 TW is very difficult. They are all very rare and highly sought. I appreciate opinions on these may differ and subjective. You can decide as this is a guide.

Opinions are welcome :)

So to summarise:

Spots 1-3
LGB, JR, and Glad TW will not change for a while

Spot 4
TDK FNAC will probably stay there for now

Spot 5 - 6
IM FS vs T2 2.0 (love this battle of value between them :))

Spot 7 - 8 - Battle between the Avengers Japan steels
IM2 JP vs Thor JP

Spot 9 -10
T4 TW vs Thor Korea (Both very rare, Thor Korea more rarer than T4 TW, but T4 has more value over Thor)

Sticker steelbooks added - 17th May

I have added Stickers list for the Stickers lovers

As you would had guessed, the French FNAC and Virgin dominate the list :naughty:

A few amendments on other lists + a few steels added and removed.

Curious to which version of Captain America Steelbook you all would consider "rarer" HMV or Amazon JP edition???

Thanks!

Definately the CA HMV UK version. Although the CA JP is listed higher on ebay, it will auction for a lot less where as the HMV one is pretty much guaranteed over £100.

Thanks for all the great work, sunnyx. I was reflecting on the present top 10 most valuable steelbooks.

I just watched again a video I first watched about a year ago - about the time I first started collecting. Granted that the "top rarest" is not quite the same as the "most valuable", but there is nonetheless a significant correlation.

It is instructive and interesting to see what was considered by one person to be the top rarest about 2 years ago. Only 2 of those steels are in the top 10 most valuable list in this thread today.

Thor, Capt America and others were issued less than 2 years ago and it is now in a number of top 10 lists. It shows that it is possible to identify yet unappreciated gems, maybe even today, which may, one day, make it to a significant top 10 list. The hunt for such gems continue for me.....:)

I remember this video as well! This was back in the old days when I first started collecting.

This was before the wave of asian releases with stickers and slips came over. Interesting how the list changes.

Do not forget, a lot of the steels have not devalued - it's just everything else has gone up.

I would say IM FS, John Rambo DE, and Wanted DE debossed will be those old original classics with exclusive artwork. I have them three all opened and mint for my personal copies and when they go, so will I :)

Yeah it's tough to really decide for me, I been on the hunt for one. Its always been the Japanese versions of the steels that become more valuable in the future but it so strange with this edition because it does seem like the HMV version is in higher demand and it doesn't even include the 3D version. Of course I can't afford all of them so I just wanted to make sure I pick the right one to have in my collection!

Thanks

I would stick with the CA HMV version.

The grail version would be the TW version of course but its much more expensive and rarer.

JP do some good steels but every country contributes just as good as well :)

My recent Le Grand Bleu find brought me to this thread.

I just wanted to say that I can verify that it was never actually sealed. They originally shipped from Amazon Japan in a poly bag with the data sheet and card (the card also being in it's own bag).

My brother-in-law had one delivered directly from Amazon at launch, so I can verify this information is 100% accurate as we were living in the same house at the time.

FYI - My brother-in-law recently found himself a new hobby and unloaded all of his steelbooks. :naughty:

Thanks for that info, we have that confirmed already from Amazon it never came sealed. But sources have told me this has come sealed directly from a store from Japan and I have seen a sealed copy on ebay last year in the summer. So we do need further confirmation...and to be honest we are never going to know.....

As far as I know, the steelbook version was only available through Amazon. Do you have some alternate information?
If you happen to know what store it was, I can help out with some research.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was traded into or simply bought and sold by another shop. Pretty much every single place here in Japan shrinkwraps items for resale.

Sofmap is a great example. Many items from them look factory sealed until you see their own sticker under the wrap.

Heh, I already know there are none for sale. I've lived in Japan for over 8 years now and have only ever seen two actual stores with new steelbooks for sale rather than used. (tsutaya and HMV)
Actually, even used steels are fairly rare in shops.
Basically, most steelbooks are sold online here.

Is there a place for despicable me, thai metalpak anywhere on any lists?

I've been told it's rare and hard to find, however i have no idea of any value?

Scratch that I have found it in stock at a retailer so it has no place on the lists here
