Mine just arrived. Looked mint until the backing came off. Couple of scratches on the rear which I would usually be annoyed with but they're sort of hard to see unless looking for (probably because of the scratched effect finish). It's a real looker in hand. When tilting I like how the border around the text changes, especially on the spine (well it does on mine!).

I'm afraid so apsmith :( just like my jungle book slash.

We've been told that the warehouse guys @ Zavvi are using plastic knives to open up the cases the steels come in, so they were saying it shouldn't be a problem on their end. :(

But I know that DB is heading up the effort to narrow it down further and get more info, so hopefully HDN members won't see this problem in the future.

Fingers crossed it gets better.

Thanks for the info apsmith  and thanks to DB for investigating this for us, fingers crossed it will improve in the future.

Just sent zavvi the pictures, hopefully it will get sorted :)

My favourite steelbook so far this year. Admittedly some I've ordered could top it (Seven Samurai, Time Bandits) but I'm very happy! Couple of very very minor scratches (no more than a millimetre or two) but hardly noticeable with the design so no need to return mine (just happy it's not dented or spine-slashed)! Great film, great design. No BS (apart from the change of release date).

apparently its enough to damage the steelbooks

i dont think the damage is done at scanavo.. why?

a) they certainly have better knowledge about the frailty of a steelbook and therefore handle them with more care

b) for example kimchi said that all 1500 steelbooks theyve ordered from scanavo arrived in mint condition

Previously, to give you an example, with play.com and when they had exclusives, the problem was happening with the company that does the retail packaging.

Remember that Scanavo, while they deliver the cases are not responsible for adding the disc, the jcard and all the other content that comes in the package.

That's why you see some jcards glued to the back of the steelbook, you see stickers used to adhere the jcard, all kinds of different things.

So saying Scanavo isn't doing it (which with staple dents and other factory defects we've seen before, like, ahem, Jack Reacher), so it must be Zavvi is a bit misleading. ;)

if a plastic knife can cut open a box, then a plastic knife can slash a steelbook spine.

Doesn't sound like a winning precaution to me.

oh ok, thought all this stuff is done by zavvi.. nvm then.. so its either the retail packaging or zavvi..

anyways IMHO plastic knives are definitely able to damage a steelbook.. especially when used without any care..

Hi all, quick reminder-if you have specific pictures of spine slashes, please post in this thread and state whether the slash is above or below the shrinkwrap-this helps to keep the individual Steel threads clean, thanks! We'll collect feedback for a while, and then close the thread and pass on feedback to Zavvi. Hopefully they can then investigate more and try to address some of these issues. Thanks!

I received my copy today. The steel is undamaged but i'm not happy about the packaging used. The foam used as protection is as thin as a butterflys wing. It would have offered no protection what so ever if the box had received a blow. The last steel I received from The Entertainment Store didn't have any foam at all. I hope this isn't a sign of how steels are going to be sent out in the future.

Not Too Sure About This, Although The SteelBook Sounds If One Of The Discs Is Loose.

Does This Mean That One Of The Plastic Grips That Holds The Disk Is Broken Or Is This Just Due To Having Two Discs Inside?

I Agree With Works99 As The Packaging Was Degraded Here.

Mine arrived today and looks fine, no damage and discs were not loose.
It's not the greatest looking steelbook to be honest but a brilliant film.
