Morning All,

Here’s a quick question/query/quandary that I haven’t heard mentioned here before – yet think it all the time.

My Shaun of the Dead Canadian Steelbook arrived the other day – and as I either collect for personal use – or for pure collection… this was to be a collection version (as I already have it on normal BluRay).

*BUT*

The sealed SteelBook has arrived – but I can hear the disc rattling around in the case.

Most annoying!

My OCD both wants me to open it to put it back on the spindle… but at the same time *NEVER* touch the cellophane!

What do people do in these situations? Nothing worse then looking at a steelbook from the collection and hearing the disc banging around (getting scratched!?)

Also, isn’t it a pain in the butt when you buy a steelbook, it comes with a UV, but you’d have to unseal to get it… So I end up having to go on eBay to buy the UV code… even though I own it.

Wow. Being a SteelBook collector is never easy!!

This is by no means a dig at you or anyone else who do this; but why do you leave your steelbooks sealed??
I've always opened mine, keep the j-cards and then store them in protective cases to avoid any scratches etc. That way, I also get to appreciate the back art anytime I so please, (which to me is an integral part of steelbook design) also safe in the knowledge that my steelbook isn't going to gather dust or get damaged.
On the UV front, not sure that there is any way around distributors offering anything different- I mean, if they want proof of purchase and want you to enter the barcode number for example, anybody can have access to this before you receive your item..
Anyway. Like I said, this isn't knocking you in any way whatsoever, I've just never understood why some people don't open their steelbooks. That's all!!

I'm sure the guy wasn't asking for a lecture on keeping steelbooks sealed.

It's actually pretty easy to re-seat a one-discer, close to impossible on 2-disc editions.

but why do you leave your steelbooks sealed??

Its usually because I already have it. Or have no interest in the movie itself - but think the cover art is brilliant.

Or a pure monetary thing, like having one in my collection for ages - then selling it - "sealed/mint" and putting my daughter through university on the back of it.

But most of the time, its the duplicate thing. As I would have bought all my favourite movies the day they came out on BluRay, then years later the cruel money-grabbing world introduced Steelbooks - and ive had to rebuy most of them.

The thread link worked wonders. Felt like I was bending/denting the steelbook, but seemed to work.

Its not like I ever take them off the shelf to rattle them, more a peace of mind thing.

And in answer to another point, yes, they are never scratched when I have opened them - as im still under the beleive that BluRays are unscratchable?! Right?!

it's rare for me to receive a steelbook with a loose disc that has become damaged due to rattling around. usually the discs have been scratch free, with the exception of a copy of the oblivion metalpak which arrived with 2 loose scratched discs.
still annoying and a little worrying initially though........

Thanks!! Just wanted some sort of insight into the logic behind that mindset, that's all...

I can't relate to this (no offence meant!). I'm a collector who puts his purchases to active use. I also have no problem in buying anything less than perfect/mint/sealed steels, as long as any defects are disclosed, and priced accordingly.
