The main thing keeping Blu-rays priced high after 10 years (in the U.K.) IMO is because the studios insist on still churning out DVDs which I personally have no use for and because DVDs have a particular price at release it's logical that Blu-rays will have to be priced higher - maybe up to a fiver - in the majority of cases in consideration of the better PG/AQ/BD Live/more space on discs for Special Features etc.
Stop or cut down production of DVDs and put as many of these titles as possible on the Blu-ray format and lo and behold the prices of Blus will drop.
Of course it will mean extra expense for the studios as it reportedly costs GBP1,600 to master a film for DVD presentation as against GBP 32,000 to do the same for Blu-ray presentation. The cost of pressing the discs is virtually the same though.

Perversely, you only have to look at pre-release prices of some of the same titles on DVD and Blu-ray and you will see that the Blus are actually priced cheaper than the DVDs (and certainly not just here in the U.K.) . . . believe it or not . . . and with Blu-ray players available for 50 quid or less it's common sense to give us more titles in HD wherever possible :)

i prefer dvd's over blurays on many older titles. this clean sharp hd looks often ruins the whole film experience since they wasnt ment to be look this way.

Actually there is alot more detail in film that dvd could show hence the blu ray and ultra blu ray version obviously showing this.

To say with a poorer visual is the way a film is supposed to be viewed is ridiculous.

ever saw an old western on blu ray? the whole gritty atmosphere is gone with that clinic steril hd look where you can also see every setpiece in the background. some movies just dont ment to look this way.

Westerns were made with technology available at the time hence the look, it definitely was not intended to be that way. Modern day western movies look great with modern technology.

Have you ever watched Avatar on DVD? Pixelated and blotchy as hell due to compression and thus why blu ray releases all that detailed goodness. No to mention dvd quality on modern TVs just looks shoddy due to its pixel restrictions and our screens and resolution ever growing.

There are some titles I still watch the DVD because the Blu is awful. And I can't stand grain, feel is like I'm watching insects everywhere

It's like when eastenders went HD. Looked even more fake

Why mention avatar? Obviously that's incredible in hd

He's on about old films

Just because it's on Blu ray and in HD it don't mean it's going to look incredible

Loads of old films look incredible in HD, especially if it's had a proper remaster... Look at any release of an old horror movie that scream factory has put out. Most of which are 30 years old

I didn't say every old film

I'm a HD nut but there are a number of films that look awful
In HD. And the majority of that number is older films

Why can't you accept that?

HD don't fix everything

Jeez I just watched eyes wide shut for the first time in HD and whilst some scenes were incredible and rich in colour some where grainy as hell and did my head in - not as bad as some films I've seen though, infact knowhere near (cough oldboy PA)

He was saying the Warriors was supposed to look the way it does on DVD as opposed to a HD version, I was disagreeing with valid reasons.

It's not just a blu ray that pulls out finer detail in a film, even watching a DVD on a high definition television would upscale it somewhat so what are we saying, the Warriors should be watched on DVD or vhs on an school TV because that's the way it's supposed to look?

Granted some blu rays are grainy as hell, Texas chainsaw massacre and rocky spring to mind but that's down to a poor conversion.

Why should I be expected to accept his opinion when you will refuse to accept mine?

My opinion is any film will look better in hi definition if the proper care is taken and it's no directors goal to have a less than stellar version of their movie visually. How many directors have overseen the remaster of their movies just make sure the HD version is done correctly for this very reason.

Some movies are supposed to have grain, its just the old film medium. A digital movies picture has different qualities.

If you take an old film that was shot on actual film and then digitally enhanced it, using noise reduction to smooth out the grain, some would argue that you have ruined the film.

But on the subject of the slip and recent other Uk steel slips, the only thing I see wrong with them is the copy and paste art. Its a missed opportunity.

Because it's a fact that not every film looks amazing in HD which is what you was disagreeing with. It's a fact

I've only seen warriors on VHS 20ish years ago and the film suits that feel IMO

Whether it can look good or it does look good is completely different. A lot of things could be great (not just films) but unfortunately that's not the truth

to be clear i never watched warriors on blu ray so i actually have no idea how it turns out in hd but its a fact that some older titles on blu ray get turned it into something completly diffrent as it was intended it to be. Movies are an art form at the end and not just an reflection of reality that must be look as sharp as possible.

Let me dig out the 8mm reel to reel from the back of the storage, hrm?! Good ole times. What's VHS?? Is that like the FBI or the CIA or something?!
I chucked out in the Bin  a few years ago over 200 VHS tapes the binmen must have had fun picking out a selection to keep
I still though have kept some VHS releases as lot of them not had a DVD or Blu-ray release

I was not bothered to bring them to the second hand store I used to manage as the amount I would have got would have not been worth the hassle of transporting them it was cheaper to chuck them in the bin

In 1997 which is when Bl-ray was released for the mainstream for movies I owned over 5000 (5k) of DVD (three letter acronyms hrm...) and I threw every single one away with the exception of the westerns which imho look best grainy, especially Clint Eastwood's old stuff.
