I think Maverick actually elevates the first film in some ways. It may be by the numbers, but sometimes "by the numbers" is executed with such perfection, it's a joy to see.

I should probably rewatch it then tbf. Might be similar to my experience with Tron... enjoyed that a hell of a lot more after watching and falling in love with Tron Legacy

I’m the exact same. Even as a cruise fan I just don’t like the original. Thought Maverick was great though so I’m hoping it kinda makes me appreciate the original more when I next watch it (which will be when Manta release it)

Yeah, love Cruise (as an actor) and there aren't many of his films I don't like. Always just found the first film way overhyped and far too camp for my liking. Will also probably give it another go soon as I'm in the mood to rewatch Maverick now too.

I loved Top Gun. Then just before this hit theaters I watched it again, and it was really corny. I'll take Maverick over it, even if I dislike that the enemy is unknown (likely because they didnt' want to piss off China).
