Prepare to visit the local haunts of Widow's Bay.

From creator Katie Dippold and director Hiro Murai, Matthew Rhys stars in Widow’s Bay, a new original series coming April 29 to Apple TV

“Widow’s Bay” is a quaint island town 40-miles off the coast of New England. But something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no wifi, spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious old locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, Loftis succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again. “Widow’s Bay” blends genuine horror with an undercurrent of character-driven comedy. Rhys stars alongside an ensemble cast led by Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey.

I thought the trailer was cheesy and just didn’t do it for me. See a few comments online recently saying it’s in the same league as Hill House, Bly manor and Midnight Mass. I couldn’t resist that. Only a few episodes in, loving it. It’s a completely different tone to those, actually quite a bit of humour, dry humour but it lands and seems great so far. Really like the main dude. Never seen him in anything before

If you like Matthew Rhys then watch The Americans (2013-2018).
Classic show.

I'd have written this last night but it was well late.

I'm on Episode 8. What got me interested in the whole series more than anything was it's quirkiness. It's not a straight up horror at all really; it falls into that fishy in-between place where it lands more as an odd ball comedy horror with dark humour and peppered with peculiar twists. There are some great episodes that take you to places you wouldn't expect and some straight up funny comedy episodes that kind of land and kind of don't. I liked those the most. No explanation for the viewer, just either go with it or go home.
It's more akin to a David Lynch production then to a Mike Flanagan show. Though it definitely can straddle both at the same time.

It's pretty good but I do wish they'd gone harder on the horror AND the dark comedy. I think the shows writers and actors are good enough to handle it.
Very interesting show overall with two episodes left.
8/10 so far.
