It is with pleasure that I can announce to you steelbook fans something that has been in the works for a while. From Scanavo comes Blu-ray Fr4me.

FR4ME™ presents a new generation of packaging. Scanavo’s FR4ME™ is a stylish, collectable and unique new way to package media.

It is Scanavo’s designers’ aim to add more collector value to media packaging and with it‘s stylish design and creative choices Fr4me™ does not disappoint!
Fr4me™ is the first packaging which gives Blu-rayTM owners the choice to customise their pack with their preferred choice of artwork. Fr4me™ can even stand, unaided, in a horizontal position like a real frame.

It’s stylish, minimalistic looks have presented a major attraction to film studio Universal Pictures, who have commissioned it for the UK release of their Sci-fi blockbuster OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise.

Within its innate ability to house a range of artwork, Fr4me™ can accommodate media on a range of materials, for instance lenticular. There is a special physical closeness to the artwork for the owner as there is no plastic film covering. A multitude of creative options exist for film studios to make Fr4me™ ideal for any genre and title.

Fr4me™ comes in a wide range of standard colours and the durable ABS substrate from which the outer ‘frames’ are made adds an exclusive touch which further redefines Blu-rayTM packaging.

With Scanavo comes the natural reassurance of quality. Scanavo - the premium packaging specialists - have created something worthy of the quality of Blu-rayTM. In a still strong physical media market, Fr4me™ adds value back into packaging and is sure to kick-start a whole new community of collectors.

OBLIVION packed in Fr4me™ will be available at most major UK retailers.
More exciting options for Fr4me™ will be developed in the near future!

Fr4me™ is a patented media packaging by Scanavo. Heard first at Hi-def Ninja

Hmmm... The thing I like about steelbooks is that, often, the artwork takes up the entire front/back cover (blu-ray bands and such not withstanding) giving a slightly bigger "canvas" for the art.
With amarays, the insert means the top and bottom doesn't allow for a bigger piece of artwork to be displayed.

I have two fears for this packaging:
#1 - It will be G1 sized to keep the picture a decent size with borders on all 4 sides.
or
#2 - It will be G2 sized meaning the artwork will be even smaller than current amarays.

To be blunt, both of those options leave me thinking the fr4me looks like 4ss.

Personally, I would be happier for Scanavo to focus on making steelbooks more dent and ding resistant.

Am I missing something or just silly? When I click the link, I see the Fr4me but the title says Oblivion and gives the Oblivion release date with price of £17.00. Is it Oblivion that you have to order to get one of these Fr4mes? Or can you order just the Fr4me? I searched Fr4me on Amazon but nothing there.

It's very odd - kind of works on Oblivion but not sure about any other release and I don't bet on this taking off. It almost looks like a lunch box :hilarious:

Let's hope they aren't ditching steelbooks in favour of these monster packs.

I didn't realise it was Scanavo who were producing this type of packaging. In any case, it looks and from what the OP says, sounds awful. I really hope Scanavo aren't going to market it as a Steelbook alternative because I would rather have an amaray case than this.

The French one for Despicable Me 2 looks ugly. Its yellow frame is an eyesore, and the plastic element looks ultra-cheap. I hope that Universal will keep releasing steelbooks as an alternative, and won't focus on this brand new offer.

nice Idea, but...

No Spine !
Is ABS embossable ?

Well it's plastic, so I imagine that there are way more embossing/debossing possibilities with this compared with Steelbooks. From what I understand though, the image won't be printed on. It will be on paper, so you can customise it of course, nothing at all to do with cost ;)

I still think this will feel like cheap crap. I'm not sure how this type of packaging will start a new collecting community when something as nice as Digibook has barely got off the ground.

Hopefully stores like HMV will be stocking these so I can have a good lool at it in hand.
Probably won't be collecting another form of packaging.

I like it the 1st time I saw it on Oblivion. It's unique, I like those kinda stuff.

It's ok as a one off..but don't want to see these becoming too popular..I worry studios may prefer these over the standard amaray and slipcover combo as the Fr4me may be cheaper for them- saves them the cost of producing a slipcover :(

I'm actually looking forward to this, it's nice to see something different come out. I have a feeling it might look good in hand!:)
