"The most anticipated Blu-ray release ever -- the Star Wars Saga -- emerges from light speed this September 2011. For the first time, all six of George Lucas' epic films (Episodes I-VI) are united in one complete set. Fans worldwide are able to pre-order now with online retailers.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Star Wars in three distinct sets to meet the needs of every Star Wars fan:

Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray (9-disc Set includes all six films)
Star Wars: Prequel Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set includes Episodes I-III)
Star Wars: Original Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set includes Episodes IV-VI)
Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films utilizing the highest possible picture and audio presentation, along with three additional discs and more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes, an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives, and much more.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray will be available for $139.99 US/$179.99 CAN and the Star Wars: Trilogy Sets for $69.99 US/89.99 CAN. Pricing for each set will vary by international territory.

Flanked by a legion of his finest Imperial stormtroopers, Darth Vader himself joined Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment President Mike Dunn at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to announce the release, vowing "The forces of the Empire will be at your disposal to assure the success of this endeavor."

"The Star Wars Saga is the most anticipated Blu-ray collection since the launch of the high-def format," Dunn said. "The epic franchise pioneered sound and visual presentation in theaters and is perfectly suited to do it again in the home, with a viewing experience only possible with Blu-ray."

"With all six episodes available for the first time in one collection, this is a great way for families and home audiences to experience the complete Saga from start to finish," said Doug Yates, Vice President of Marketing, Online, Distribution, Lucasfilm Ltd. "And with the quality of high-definition, Blu-ray provides the most immersive home experience possible."

"The Star Wars franchise has been the most anticipated Blu-ray release by Amazon's customers," said Bill Carr, Vice President of Music and Video at Amazon.com. "We think that Star Wars will be incredibly popular with our customers, and we expect pre-orders to be very strong.""

Thanks Dave S @ TBS.

Hell I dont even remember which ones I was used to seeing then. I watched vhs back in the days but I own the dvd set from many years ago. That first dvd set released, was that special editions too?

The Special Editions Were First released on VHS in the 90's, so if you had VHS from before then it was the theatrical editions. when Star Wars finally came to DVD, it was originally released as only the Special Editions in a box set then Re-released with both Versions (theatrical and special) on indivindual title releases by episode ( IV, V, VI) After Revenge of the Sith was released to DVD.

Thanks everyone for chiming in to this thread, for what will be undoubtedly be a high profile release. Please keep the comments comin'-I am sure we'll get quite a number of reactions as we get closer to the release and after the actual release. Is there a name for hardcore Star Wars fans? If so, feel free to share, so we can create a fandom in here?;)

I really hope they give us the options not to view the special edition releases. I hated most of the digital crap they added to the original trilogy. I saw the original trilogy many many times before the special editions, as i'm sure many others did as well. The new Jabba scenes, new slave pit dance scenes and such, were just horrible, imo.

I watched the original Star Wars when first released back in the 70's at a theatre in Sacramento, CA...blew me away! What a fun movie. I also enjoyed the next two releases as they somewhat maintained that fun, swashbuckling type of atmosphere the original movie had. Then we waited...and got those ridiculous pieces of nonsense complete with Jar Jar and the awful acting of Hayden Christensen (in my humble opinion) :) I will probably get the blu-ray releases when they come out but when I see them today I cringe at what Lucas turned them into. If I have a choice I will only buy the first three films.

Blueglide-that must have been an amazing experience. It's just magical to experience them initially, or re-experience them again on the big screen!:)

In case you missed it-per news here at the forum, an announcement regarding the BD release is expected at 11:30am via the Panasonic Booth at CES. Stay tuned!

It was pretty cool...I was a college student back then and Star Wars mania was everywhere. That was cutting edge stuff back then and Lucas did some groundbreaking stuff. I was even younger when I first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey I loved it but alot of folks who never read the book walked out scratching their heads. Star Wars was fun and it was the classic good guys versus the bad guys stuff. The audience really got into those movies..cheering..clapping..etc. Lots of fun.

Yeah, those experiences are truly amazing. I've been to a few "sing-alongs", and also saw Alien on the big screen in Philly (I am a HUGE fan). I was in heaven, man,and the energy from an audience experiencing an event like that together is fantastic, imo.

Of course I'm buying this set regardless which versions we get. I would prefer every version included on each disc, but I know Uncle Georges tricks so we'll get them released separately so I'll be forced to double dip them.

I'll bet we get milked harder than a Guernsey cow for all the various versions of these releases! :D George is the master at marketing his products.

Yup. I already expect a special 3D release about a year after this one comes out. Fortunately for me I don't have any interest in 3D right now, and probably won't for another 4-5 years when it comes time to upgrade the television we just bought 3 weeks ago. Of course with that I'll have to upgrade to a new player and receiver too.

This is going to cost me dearly I just know it! double dipping is tough :D:ohno:
