The sequel to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, Rockstar's take on spaghetti westerns, is coming to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall, Rockstar Games announced this morning.

Red Dead Redemption is the story of former outlaw John Marston and will take place at the turn of the 20th century when the "lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age."

"Along the way, players will experience the heat of gunfights and battles, meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it."

“The team at San Diego have massively exceeded our expectations with the sheer depth of experiences in Red Dead Redemption,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “The seamless combination of breathtaking beauty and intense action, all woven together with strong plotlines in a massive vibrant, rural environment is mind-blowing. We think this game helps to push the limits of what an open-world gaming experience can be.”

The game will use Rockstar's proprietary RAGE game engine, which was used in Table Tennis, Grand Theft Auto IV and Midnight Club: Los Angles.

The game will feature an open-world environment which will include frontier towns, wildlife-packed prairies and mountain passes.

I loved Red Dead Revolver, despite the average reviews and 1.5 million copies sold, and it's great to see that the sequel is finally moving forward. Now about that Gun sequel.

Firing from cover was a staple of Red Dead Revolver, so we can expect to see plenty more of it, and of situations requiring it

I'm willing to help! My group of randoms got to level 15 on the first try.

I think I used the overkill or whatever it's called guns, and went out of my way to be medic when needed.

Red Dead Redemption Double XP Weekend Starts Today

Rockstar has announced they're holding a 2x XP weekend for Red Dead Redemption from today through Sunday. That's four days of six-shooting, rooting and tooting levelling-up multiplayer fun.

"Stuff Yourself with 4 Days of Red Dead Redemption Double XP," Rockstar announced via its website.

Rockstar still has 'massive number of ideas' for Red Dead

Rockstar’s Jeronimo Barrea has let slip that the developer still has a saddlebag full of ideas left over from development of Red Dead Redemption that ultimately didn’t make the final cut.

Fans have been clamouring for a sequel since the Wild West extravaganza galloped on to store shelves back in May 2010, though Rockstar’s yet to commit to a follow-up.

Still, Barrea revealed the developer is pretty chuffed with the game's success, particularly at how swift news of the title travelled via word-of-mouth recommendations.

"[We're most pleased] either that huge numbers of people loved the game enough to play through to the end, and then encouraged friends to play it - we hope without spoiling the end for them - or at a more basic level... that we could convince that many people that they wanted to play a game about the wild west," he told OPM UK.

Quizzed as to whether there was enough leftover material to cobble together a sequel, Barrea replied, "For all the games we work on, we have a massive number of ideas that [don't] make it in."

Why do people do that in interviews ALL THE TIME ...

like the last sentence, the don't is in brackets.

How come it wasnt just written, surely the person speaking said it otherwise none of it would make sense to begin with. I hate that jargon in interviews.

Red Dead Redemption patch fixes numerous bugs

Rockstar released another update to Red Dead Redemption. This is a mandatory patch that fiees many bugs. One of the finest fixes is the removal of the required reboot when swapping from single player to multiplayer. In addition, the patch addresses bugs in the standard game, Liars & Cheats, and Undead Nightmare.

There are tons of updates (listed below via Rockstargames.com) all of which will hopefully provide a smoother gaming experience.

Red Dead Redemption:

* The game no longer reboots when switching from MP to SP, or from regular SP to MP. Going to the main menu from any mode or leaving Undead Nightmare single player mode will still reboot (except Japan).
* Lasso will now retract properly when thrown while riding fast on a horse.
* Removed display message saying "This horse is now your trusty steed" when you hitch a horse that you already own.
* Re-enabled world-wide multiplayer compatibility with Japan.
* Fix for failing and retrying the mission You Shall Not Give False Testimony, Except for Profit where attempting to shoot the skull prevents John from using his gun until switching to an unarmed state and back.
* Fix for Land Grab multiplayer mode where occasionally the match will start with the timer at 500 and the game doesn’t end and no XP is awarded.
* Fix for player becoming stuck indefinitely when sitting at a certain Liar's Dice chair in Casa Madrugada.
* Fix for the host entering an unresponsive loading screen when client opts to join another session as the lobby timer reaches 0 seconds.
* Fix for picking up opponents bag at the same time as it is returned to their chest, during a game of Grab the Bag.
* Fix for issue that causes multiple mine carts to appear when replaying Gaptooth Gang Hideout.
* Fix for selecting private Free Roam during a barker countdown, which was causing a constant load.

Undead Nightmare DLC:

* The Gunslinger Achievement/Trophy now recognizes zombies as enemies.
* Fixed a disparity in the headshots and undead headshots stat when shooting zombie animals.
* Fix for meter not advancing during Undead Overrun when one player leaves the game in progress.
* Fix for player occasionally bonding with undead horses and the Four Horses of the Apocalypse.
* Fix for occasional crashing or freezing in the Las Hermanas area & during the mission Mother Superior Blues.

Liars & Cheats DLC:

* Fix for player becoming stuck indefinitely when sitting at certain Liar's Dice chairs.
* Fix for issues when a user is removed from a Liar’s Dice session due to connection issues with other players, but the camera remains in the dice game while the player is returned to Free Roam or chooses other game modes.

Undead Nightmare Disc:

* Original Game mode option removed from main menu.
* Fix for 75 second delay before displaying an error message when installing on a system with a completely full hard disk (PS3 only).

I was actually thinking about this too, I have so much to do on it. I may finish Undead though before I do reg campaign because Im pretty far in Undead.

I look at it like I have a little over a month to do some random gaming before I get into KZ3 heh.

Well, if it has a mandatory patch then I cant even do it. I have serious probs right now, where I keep getting Erorr code 80710723 and everything I have read to fix it hasnt worked. Its very frustrating, I didnt do any gaming yesterday (besides one NBA live 10 game) because i spent all day trying different settings found off internet and trying diff routers.

basically, I cant download any patches, and the worst thing is ... many people who have this problem, it happens at 1% on the download, mine occurs at 99% so its very frustrating to keep testing because i have to wait through entire download before I know if it fails.

And Im trying this with a 656mb install ; ugh.

New contest for RDR!

The Red Dead Redemption Rockstar XP Challenge has officially begun, ladies and gentlemen. Grizzled veterans and greenhorns alike in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer on Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network will be on equal footing as the entire online population works starting today to unlock special avatar rewards for their respective platforms. In lieu of the originally announced "Skin It to Win It" and "I Shot the Sheriff" Challenges to unlock these avatars, the test will now be for players on each console to harness their collective XP earning skills online and get that thermometer up from zero to 100%.

Here's how to do your part. Boot up your platform of choice and jump into any Red Dead Redemption multiplayer session. From Free Roam to Grab the Bag - whatever your pleasure. Enjoy your multiplayer game as you normally would and when your session ends, all of the XP that you accumulate will be automatically added to your platform's XP grand total.

You can track the progress of both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 earnings via the live XP thermometer at the Red Dead Redemption Social Club Community page, the Social Club Homepage, or even at the sidebar here at the Rockstar Newswire. When a platform reaches 100%, we will unlock the avatar awards for that platform community.

The unlockable avatars will grace your Xbox LIVE and/or PlayStation Home characters with the spiffy Elegant Suit just like the unlockable one Marston himself rocks in the game. And when the occasion calls for something less dressy, there will also be the crimson Posse t-shirt. Each available for both male and female avatars. Check out some preview shots of all the unlockable avatar outfits below.

Red Dead Redemption's Pre-Order Items Coming to PSN

If you pre-ordered Red Dead Redemption or managed to get hold of the Limited Edition then you'll already have the Deadly Assassin Outfit, Golden Guns Weapon Pack and the War Horse, but if you missed out on that exclusive content, then you'll soon have the chance to snap it up via the PlayStation Store.

These items will be available from Tuesday April 12th (AKA tomorrow) and rolled out across all territories over the subsequent 24-48 hours. The Deadly Assassin Outfit gives John Marston a sexy new stetson, dusty brown duds and a fetching eyepatch, as well as regenerating your Deadeye meter at twice the speed, while the Golden Guns Weapon Pack turns your pistols and rifle a lovely golden colour, earning you more Fame for each kill. And the more Fame you acquire, the more varmints will want to duel with you and the more side quests you'll unlock.

And finally, the War Horse is the toughest damn nag in the whole of Red Dead Redemption. It's the fastest, strongest and most resilient horse in the game making it invaluable for storming gang hideouts or busting bandits. The Deadly Assassin Outfit, Golden Guns Weapon Pack and War Horse will be available from April 12th for $0.99 apiece.

In other news, Rockstar has also promised that LA Noire's pre-order DLC will be made available as DLC much, much sooner than Red Dead Redemption's.

Final Red Dead Redemption DLC announced, will be free

Rockstar today announced that Red Dead Redemption would lasso itself another (last) batch of DLC to show appreciation for the long-term support the game's multiplayer has been getting since it's release in 2010.

Best part of all? The DLC is free.

The Myths and Mavericks Bonus Pack will feature new playable multiplayer characters, and new locations for Deathmatch, Grab the Bag, and Gang matches.

The Myths and Mavericks pack is expected to hit PlayStation Network in September.
