The followup to last year’s ’80s action mashup, The Expendables 2, is now officially slated for theatrical release almost two years exactly after its predecessor shot, cut, slashed, smashed, and whatever-other-past-tense-violent-verb-you-can-think-of its way into theaters.

Lionsgate has settled on August 17th, 2012 as the day of release for Expendables 2, just a week after another explosion-and-action friendly blockbuster sequel, GI Joe 2, arrives on the scene.

Former ’80s and ’90s action stars including Jean-Claude Van Damme aim to join the party in The Expendables 2, while both Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger could potentially expand on their all-too-brief cameos from the first film and become either supporting or main characters in the follow-up.

The news that Stallone will let someone else call the shots on this sequel should be more than welcome by those who recall the shoddy cinematography and uneven editing in the first Expendables. While the film still managed to be an overall entertaining ride for those in the mood for high-octane violence, most would agree there’s plenty of room for improvement.

So what other aging action stars could sign up for Expendables 2? Names like Steven Seagal and Chuck Norris have been bandied about a lot, although both turned down parts in the first; I suppose even someone like Keanu Reeves is of a fitting age to join the party (assuming everyone wants to invite him?). Maybe we’ll get a kick-ass actress onboard this time as well. I’ll go ahead and nominate Michelle Rodriguez, who proved herself more than worthy just recently in Battle: Los Angeles.

Something about Either one of those Actor's are So Retarded to me,it isn't even funny how cheesy their movie's Were...Nothing compared to the real action movie's of the 90's like Blood sport,universal solider.

as much as Jackie chan is getting Old,i want to see him Kicking ass with jet li,But i Heard Jackie chan himself say he wanted to make a movie with Jet Li Right after the first one they made together...a Hong Kong style action movie...so that's gonna be pretty good too in the future.

Rumored ‘Expendables 2′ Cast

With director Simon West preparing to shoot The Expendables 2 soon aiming at an August 17, 2012 release, it’s high-time we heard something about his cast. We expect that surviving members of the original – Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Jet Li and possibly Bruce Wills – could all return but, according to an interview with the CEO of the “biggest film studio” in the country the film will shoot, Bulgaria, joining the cast are John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Have our muscle-throbbing, old-man action-star dreams come true? We explore the rumor after the jump.

The list of names comes from David Varod, the CEO of the Bulgarian based film company Nu Boyana who was doing an interview with Novinite (with a heads up to Collider) about films that are going to shoot in the country. Here’s the exchange:

Novinite: Some very big names have been mentioned recently as very likely to shoot in Bulgaria soon, the likes of Bruce Willis and Silvester Stallone. Is there any development on that?

Varod: Yes, we are definitely going to do that project. It is going to be a sequel the “The Expendables”. The shooting is going to take place the second week of September. The movie is on, definitely. It will be a very good thing for Bulgaria, since there are some very big stars coming.

Novinite: Would you disclose some of the names coming for sure?

Varod: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke…who else? Of course, Bruce Willis. The director is Simon West, who is also a name. He is already here and has started working on the film. I believe the sequel will be better than the first movie.

While this certainly sounds legitimate and Nu Boyana is a legitimate studio (the new Conan reportedly shot there too), you can’t believe anything 100% until we hear it from the mouth of the beast, in this case Lionsgate. So best to take this with a grain of salt and be cautiously optimistic.
