Angry Birds Toons: Season One – Volume Two Blu-ray Review

AngryToonsS1V2-1

For years, there has been a war between the birds and the piggies. The eggs are stolen by the pigs and the birds retaliate. Enjoyable does not have to mean complicated. Their popularity has spread to a lot of different media from games on mobile phones, consoles, and computers and now their story has come to cartoons. The adventures of their fighting, scheming and egg thievery can be viewed as much as you like.

Angry Birds is arguably one of the most successful gaming IPs over the last several years and their stride has still yet to slow down. At first, I wasn’t too sure how these cartoons were going to be given the content and their length. After watching the second volume of the season, I can see why making them into shorts rather than the typical 20 minute cartoons makes sense. There is no dialogue but there are the normal noises that the animals make in the games and 20 minutes of that may lose viewers quickly. The animation matches the game right down to the line styles.

The 1080p HD video transfer looks excellent on this Blu-ray. The stylized art technique is taken directly from the game to the images screen. The lines aren’t completely perfect but that is what the animators intended. There is a lot of CG cell shading that creates depth and gives the animation an almost 3D effect. The expanded pallets of colors are vivid and bold, making the images leap off of the screen. There is definitely no lack of brightness in these cartoons. There is however a little sporadic pixilation but nothing that takes away from the sharp images to warrant negativity. Like most animation on Blu-ray, the higher quality presentation is worth viewing on this format.

The audio mix is a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 at 192kbps that is surprisingly strong. The soundtrack, mixed with the effects, is separated and very clear. Also, the effects are like an organized chaos when the two factions engage each other. The range of the mix is broad with the LFEs especially having a powerful prescience. The clarity in the highs and mids is excellent and this is an overall solid mix that Sony should definitely be proud to have released.

On the disc, all of the bonus features are in HD. They’re incredibly short but the release is aimed at a younger audience. So, they might not be as interested in the extras as the adults.

Bonus Features
-Easter Egg Hunt: this is a 40 second short about, you guessed it, Easter and eggs.

-Meet the Characters: this is a series of short clips of the different characters in the shorts. The characters are Bomb Bird, Terence, Chef Pig, and Corporal Pig.

-Behind the Scenes: this short featurette series including goes over Character Design, Producing, Directing and Coordinating, Compositing, Tools and Color Grading, and Sound Design, Voice Acting and Music. It gives some good information about combining all of the elements it takes to make the series.

-Previews: These are a few Sony titles coming soon.

The animated shorts are exactly what is to be expected: birds fighting pigs and no audible dialogue aside from the grunts and chirps that they’re known for. There are 26 episodes but they aren’t very long, making this a short release overall. Even though the audio is only in 2.0, it is a great mix and the video transfer is also well done. I suggest watching my favorite episode, Night of the Living Pork. Its Angry Birds and zombies, what’s not to like? This is a high quality release that I would recommend for family viewing or if you enjoy this fun little cartoons from the games.
