Sounds like they didn't expect to sell out so quick perhaps. Making more and pushing date back would be my guess...

Between that, the sudden omission of a bluray, similar front art & the fact we know the 4k will be at the mercy of HDR magic and not any resolution uptick on the whole... this definitely doesn't feel like a cash grab.

Usually they'd go ahead with the release date and commit to printing more, like in the US for Tombstone. Or do a LiMiTEd eDiTiOn reprint down the line. Sony love a reprint.

Perhaps they fear word will get about that the 4k isn't up to much, and want to capitalise on sales now. My expectations were at 0 but I think I'll dial them back a bit and hang on to my blu.

Agreed.

If they had made any improvements to the picture you'd think they would have been banging the drum about this already.
Any pre-release advertising saying something like; "28 Days, like you've never seen it before!".... Nope. Any blurb in the product description about the picture upgrade being "supervised by the Director himself".... Nah.

I would love to be proven wrong, but I don't believe this film was ever meant for 4K.

It really wasn't. Resolution wise, there's not a lot you can do to it. I don't think it's an AI job, I think it'll just be a scan from the theatrical negative, which itself was mostly an upscale from a mixture of video, 8mm and 35mm sources.

I think it'll look better than the blu-ray, as a 2024 scan, master and encode are all far superior to 2007 technology, but it won't be transformative. Dolby Vision & Atmos will carry the weight.
