Have this on preorder with amazon.de but on seeing the pic I think I'm going to cancel.

I wasn't over the moon about the art to begin with, but the finish is just terrible. You can hardly make out the names of the actors on the front. I was hoping it would have been gloss.

Got mine today, Matt zavvi? Really, seriously? You're having a laugh at us surely. I actually love the artwork, the design is nice, but you totally f%#^+d up what could have been an A+ steel book once more by embossing where it isn't needed and a Matt finish. Those colours, especially the blacks against the neons would have been STUNNING in high gloss. When will you learn. So dissapointing. Worst of all it means gangs of New York etc will likely be the same half arsed attempt at a steelbook.

I don't particularly like Zavvi and don't use them very often, however the criticism they receive regarding what finish a steelbook is, is becoming tiresome, nothing to do with Zavvi, they are simply a vendor who give you the option of buying it or not...

Or maybe the reason Zavvi have so many exclusives is because all other retailers reject the crappy steelbooks that Zavvi happily sign up without thinking. I honestly think their mindless scattergun approach to BUYING steelbooks from studios is damaging the SB game. I think they'd much prefer the rights to 10 cheap poor quality steels than 5 very well made steels with a high standard of art and finish.

Quite frankly the number of people making Zavvi out to be totally innocent is equally tiresome...

If you go into a store and buy a video game, take it home and think it is crap once you have played it, do you blame the kid who served you in the store or do you blame the people who produced it?

The funny thing is... a lot of these steels are also available from Amazon.de, yet no one's bashing/blaming the retailer in those threads.

Maybe it's because most people complaining about it have received their copies and are from the UK, while Amazon.de have not shipped these yet. Also, I think germans are not that spoiled and are used to get these cheap releases.

How many times do people have to say this - Retailers dont make steelbooks, they just sell them. The studios make them.

Breathe :emb:

So many of us keep saying this; and still people keep on blaming Zavvi for it!

Frankly there's lots else to blame Zavvi for: saturating the market, poor pricing policies, sometime bad packaging, seriously bad customer services, take your pick . . .

As for AI - I cancelled my pre-order. I believe it is supposed to be almost OOS - but I won't cry

I find it strange how they only have 300 or so copies remaining yet over the course of two days still haven't sold out but upon release they quickly sold 2500 copies. Where did all those potential buyers go? This seems fishy. Won't be happy if this recent Warner Wave drops to £6.99.

Well that's a completely different type of product and situation. A.I. as a film has been around for a long time and if I was complaining about the quality of the film then of course my issue would have been with the studio in question. We're talking specifically about steelbooks here, and when the studio tries offers a retailer an exclusive SB it is up to that retailer to ensure it meets a certain standard or to reject it outright. Otherwise the studio will think they can keep reducing the quality on offer (and increase profits) until the retailer says "no". Trouble is Zavvi never says "no" and so standards keep on slipping.

I'm not saying Zavvi are entirely to blame, but I cannot accept that they are totally blameless and I'm amazed that some of you think that is the case.

people playdown and even deny zavvi's involvement witht he creation of some of its zavvi exclusive steels, they quite clearly do have a say in design matters.

take roger rabbit anniversary (reprint,) its clear that zavvi approached the studio to do a reprint in gold, its not like the studio told zavvi they have to sell gold copies in celebration of two years of selling steelbooks. this proves zavvi do have a say.

also there have been many times where criticisms of steelbook art on this forum, has led to the artwork being changed, with the help of discussion between this board and zavvi. so agian, zavvi DO have a say in some of its exclusives design and finish.

these are usually the steels which are actually exclusive to zavvi, and not merely steels with split print runs between zavvi and the rest of europe.

it seems people pick and choose when zavvi are responsible for the steelbooks they sell. if the steel turns out great people are quick to drop to the floor and worship zavvi, but when shxt hits the fan, all of a sudden zavvi have nothing to do with it....

I'm not saying Zavvi are totally blameless, personally I am more ANTI-Zavvi than I am pro-Zavvi, they release far too many and yes I agree with your earlier comment regarding their scattergun approach, If you look at the start of this thread I was one of the first people to say that with a little bit of care and consideration this could be a really nice release, I also knew that it would be more than likely dross which sadly it has turned out to be, but I'm not going to blame Zavvi for this or for the MASK Steelbook which I actually bought, the fact is Zavvi never says "no" because people buy them, I respect your opinion and I agree with large part's of it, but let's face it, if Zavvi stopped selling these tomorrow, HMV or Amazon would start knocking them out....
