I'll just pop in the mondo subforum for a minute to see if people there pour this much hate into "hand drawn" "cartoon" "artsy-fartsy" stuff as well.

(not saying that this is on par with the work mondo artists do, but the comments above clearly target the artistic approach in general)

I drawn the line (no pun intended) between cartoons, caricature, and real artistic drawing or painting.
There is a difference between Don Martin and CAPTAIN KLUTZ in MAD magazine and Jock's DREDD and The THING steelbook covers.
I'm sure the artist is a nice and well meaning fella- but this is not the steelbook art people have been waiting for. And what is worse: it isn't even close.

I actually find it quite funny that it mostly seems to just be the designers among us that really appreciates the winning art... I'm not sure what that says about us lol.

Lol of course they went with a terrible design. It's required in these competitions (Only God Forgives, Machete, Whiplash, etc.). I'm guessing the same will happen with Better Call Saul.

It looks like a fan-made steel by a Photoshop amateur. I know that's what it is technically, but there were professional-level submissions.

These are also awesome

Yes, that would have been awesome.

But ultimately it doesn't matter, because I wasn't going to buy it anyway as it's the same old poor transfer. The only way I would have bought it is if it had the Australian disc with the better PQ.

I never really get the huge amount of hate these winners get. I didn't like the first Whiplash art at all though but Machete Kills and Only God Forgives are cool. Actually I couldn't have wished better art for Only God Forgives, even if the steelbook itself isn't that good. And this one has potential too, I'm eager to see how it will actually look like. Not crushing it before that.

It's definitely fair to say that some do go a bit too far with sharing their dislike for artwork at times... they could at least be constructive with their criticism, but oh well. I suppose you can't please everyone... there's some steels that I think look awful, yet a lot of others rave about them. I actually quite like the artwork for Only God Forgives too... I personally think it captures the style of the film pretty well. The only way I'll be disappointed with this one is if they make it silver rather than white... other than that I reckon it'll look great in hand. :)

I'm also a fan of the only God forgive steel, just wished it was gloss to make it look a bit better.
With this I don't mind the artwork but that smile just looks strange and out of place.
I also agree and hope this is white and not silver

I also like the only god forgives steelbook but with this it is the smile that ruins it for me like I said I don't mind the dragging body artwork but that front artwork just doesn't do it for me compared to some of the other designs. I think this could have been so much better looking at the other designs. That's my opinion though.

That'd be my only complaint with the OGF steel too... it should've been gloss. I don't mind the smile... I think it makes him look more like a "psycho" lol. Although, I wouldn't mind if they got rid of it.
